DC will release a seven-issue Pennyworth tie-in comic that further explores Alfred Pennyworth's life before he became Thomas Wayne's butler -- but after the timeframe of the EPIX TV series.

Pennyworth #1 puts the titular hero in the middle of Cold War intrigue, on a mission to find out who's been making nuclear arms at a Russian military base that's way, way up north, near the Arctic Circle.

  • Spanning the years between the hit TV show and today, Pennyworth tells the continuing adventures of Alfred Pennyworth as an MI6 counterintelligence agent—this time in Cold War-era Soviet Russia. When Alfred and his partner receive intelligence that nuclear weapons are being manufactured near the Arctic Circle, they’re off to infiltrate the remote military base to learn more. But things don’t go exactly as planned, and the ramifications of this mission may be more far-reaching than anyone could have guessed, as our present-day butler gets dragged back into his past...

Set in London in the swinging 1960s, Pennyworth stars Jack Bannon as Alfred Pennyworth. The series takes place in an alternate continuity, reimagining Pennyworth as an ex-British SAS soldier who launches a security firm, and finds himself working to thwart a plot against Parliament by the Raven Society, an extremist group. As agents of the No Name League, Thomas and Martha Wayne are Pennyworth's allies in the struggle against the Raven Society, although Thomas Wayne is also working undercover for the CIA.

In the Season 2 finale, the New Raven Alliance and the English League are engaged in full-scale war, and Martha Wayne gives birth to a girl. EPIX carried Pennyworth for two seasons. A third season is currently in limbo as producer Warner Bros. works on a deal to bring the reruns to HBO Max.

Developed by former Gotham collaborators Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon, Pennyworth stars Jack Bannon as Alfred Pennyworth, Ben Aldridge as Thomas Wayne, Jason Flemyng as Lord Harwood, Paloma Faith as Bet Sykes, Ryan Fletcher as Dave Boy, Hainsley Lloyd Bennett as Bazza, Jessica Ellerby as the Queen and Simon Manyonda as Lucius Fox.

Written by Scott Bryan Wilson with artwork by Juan Gedeon and a cover by Jorge Fornes, Pennyworth #1 goes on sale Aug. 10.
