New plot details have emerged about Pennyworth, Epix's upcoming Batman prequel that follows a young Alfred Pennyworth, years before he became Bruce Wayne's trusted butler.
Jack Bannon (The Imitation Game, Ripper Street) stars as Alfred Pennyworth, a former British SAS soldier who forms a security company in 1960s London, and goes to work with Thomas Wayne (Ben Aldridge), who's not yet the father of Bruce Wayne.
After purportedly viewing the pilot, a Splash Report writer Ludens describes Pennyworth as "daring," saying, "the show is no-holds-barred: R-rated swearing, gore, violence, sex, are all prevalent in the world of Pennyworth."
Referring to Bannon's character as "awesome," Ludens writes that, "Alfred carries a lot of baggage from his time in the war, but he doesn’t let it get in the way of his life," or the future ahead of him.
Among the cast of mob-types and wackos is a young Thomas Wayne, who's single and has not yet met his future wife Martha. Instead of a being a surgeon, as in the comics, Wayne is a billionaire expat and finance analyst working for the government.
The story centers around an attempt by the secretive Raven Society, which Ludens calls "akin to the Court of Owls" from DC comics, to capture Thomas Wayne. The group abducts Alfred's love interest, Esme, forcing him to use his particular set of skills to rescue her.
Developed by former Gotham collaborators Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon, Pennyworth stars Jack Bannon, Ben Aldridge, Jason Flemyng and Paloma Faith. It's expected to premiere in 2019 on Epix.
