As preproduction continues on Showtime's Penny Dreadful spiritual successor, Penny Dreadful: City of Angels, the series has cast a new lead actor.

Three-time Tony Award-winning actor Nathan Lane has been cast as Lewis Michener, a veteran police officer in the Los Angeles Police Department. He will serve as the experienced mentor to the series' protagonist Detective Tiago Vega (Daniel Zovatto).

A spinoff to Showtime's popular horror series, Penny Dreadful, was first announced by the network this past November. Whereas the original series took place in Victorian London, the upcoming soft reboot will take place in 1938 Los Angeles with the city shocked by a murder linked to Mexican folklore, Nazi spies and its own supernatural underpinnings in the Southern California setting. As Detective Vega investigates the murder, he finds himself drawn deeper and deeper into the city's criminal and supernatural underworld.

The original series' creator and writer John Logan has signed on to develop the new series for Showtime with principal photography expected to begin by the end of the year.
