WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Penny Dreadful: City of Angels.

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels freaked fans out when it introduced the offspring of the demonic Magda (Natalie Dormer). She brings her son, Frank (Santino Barnard), to Dr. Peter Craft's (Rory Kinnear) office, and there the couple starts sowing seeds for an affair. The moment that stuns viewers is when Magda gets to the elevator and absorbs Frank back into her body, as if this were a David Cronenberg scene.

Apparently, Magda, who's disguised as this unhappy German wife, Elsa, wants to manipulate Peter due to him running a Nazi group in Los Angeles. While viewers thought Frank was an extension of the supernatural shapeshifter, it seems he has a mind of his own, and when he gives fans a taste of his powers, he's actually scarier than his 'mom.'

The signs are there earlier this season that Frank might have been his own entity just being carried in Magda's body. When she reconciles with his form, she doesn't absorb the information he gleans from Peter's sons, Trevor (Hudson West) and Tom (Julian Hilliard), suggesting his mind is independent. It appears he's just given his commands mentally and has to carry out directives however he sees fit. Hints are dropped at the beach when Peter and Elsa meet up by 'chance,' but viewers know Elsa is tracking and subtly seducing the good ole' doctor.

She and Frank come over for a party at the Craft residence a couple days later, and it culminates in Peter and Elsa having sex in his study after his negligent wife, Linda (Piper Perabo), gets jealous and tries to chide Elsa. Elsa's faking an unhappy marriage too, so to them, this feels right.

Little does Peter know Frank is toying with his boys, and Trevor's falling hook, line and sinker. At the beach an episode ago, while playing with toy soldiers, Frank teaches Trevor about death, which freaks Tom out. For some reason the younger Tom isn't won over by stories of invaders, colonizers and genocide, and when the boys have a sleepover that night, it gets out of control.

Frank tells the party a scary story about a young girl down the block who got kidnapped. When the parents paid the ransom, they saw a car with the hostage in it, but as it pulled off and dropped the girl on the street, her family found a corpse whose eyes were sewn to look like they were open. What makes it more horrific is that the body had no limbs, which freaks Tom out, but no one else is horrified, and viewers are left wondering if Frank is using mental powers to specifically target Tom.

When they fall asleep, Frank taps into Tom's mind and induces a nightmare where this same girl attacks the boy. It's a straight-up horror-fest as Frank manifests the corpse, scaring the life out of Tom. As the dead girl moves in to attack, he awakens from the nightmare with the fear of God in him. At this point, Frank's taking pleasure in the torment, and his sinister face and eerie smile reflects the look Elsa has when she accomplishes something sinful.

Audiences can tell this is part of a bigger plan, and Frank has his role to play with the kids. It'll definitely influence Peter to make a decision regarding Elsa, who might want to leave her husband for him. Peter could be ready to boot the alcoholic Linda as well, so maybe Frank's supposed to win the kids over for their parents to be together, but if that's the case, he's toying with Tom and putting nightmares into the boy's mind.
