Peacock, the streaming service from NBCUniversal, is performing better than expected following Comcast's report of its third-quarter earnings.

According to NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell, as reported by Deadline, Peacock is "way ahead of where we expected to be," reporting strong numbers during the company's third-quarter earnings call, as well as a significant gain in broadband customers and ad revenue from streaming the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.

"Everything on Peacock is heading in the right direction," Shell said. "There's really nothing, from a trajectory perspective, that's any different than it was last quarter or the quarter before. All metrics are pointed up. Our usage continues to be great, our mix of users continues to be great. We added a few million more subs, more monthly active users."

In April, it was reported that Peacock achieved 42 million sign-ups in its first quarter, with a third of those 42 million sign-ups belonging to monthly active accounts. At the time, Peacock had reached "about a third" of the number of users Hulu has amassed over the course of 13 years, according to Shell. As of July, Hulu, which is a paid subscription, had 42.8 million subscribers; now, in its third quarter, Peacock has reportedly surpassed those numbers. While subscribers can pay $5 monthly for Peacock Premium, while the basic tier is free.

"We've been a business for just over a year and we're already more than a third of what Hulu is now, which is a service that's more than a decade in the making," said Shell. He also stated that there will be "a ramp-up of originals on Peacock, which is very necessary to continue to grow." Peacock recently announced a Pitch Perfect spinoff series starring Adam Divine's character, Bumper Allen. Other recently announced original series include Vampire Academy and an adaptation of the Alex Scarrow novel, Last Light.

While he did not provide any streaming numbers, Shell also said that day-and-date releases, such as Halloween Kills and Boss Baby: Family Business "move the needle." Both Halloween Kills and the Boss Baby sequel premiered simultaneously in theaters and on the streaming service.

Peacock originally launched in July 2020 and, according to NBCU, the streaming service had 54 million active users as of June 30, with 20 million active monthly viewers. The company projected the streaming service will reach between 30 million to 35 million active users by 2024.
