WARNING: The following contains spoilers for the first three episode of Peacemaker, streaming now on HBO Max.

In The Suicide Squad, John Cena's Chris Smith/Peacemaker portrayed a psychopathic figure under his comedic demeanor regarding how far he'd go in the line of duty. He killed Rick Flag to protect Amanda Waller's secrets, confirming he was a villain all along, even if he did justify it under the banner of national security. However, as Peacemaker rolls on in the first three episodes, as much as Chris claims he has a code, he proves at the worst possible time that he isn't willing to enforce it.

His mantra has always been, "I cherish peace with all of my heart. I don't care how many men, women and children I kill to get it." It's part of why he has a dove of peace on all his weapons, as he thinks this makes him a symbol for good and absolves him of any sin.

But bit by bit, Chris kept experiencing trauma and little moments that proved he wasn't the killer he said he was. In fact, it's helping shape him as a sympathetic soldier seeking redemption. From his interaction with the hospital janitor, Jamil, to his own racist, violent dad, Auggie, he has been unlearning what he was conditioned with for decades: hatred.

And as much as the marksman has been a pawn and WMD for Waller, he's fingered as a hypocrite and maybe even a liar, as it's still unclear how much red is in his ledger from his checkered past. It comes to light in "Better Goff Dead," in the van when the ARGUS team confirms they'll be killing Senator Goff -- an alien hybrid known as a Butterfly -- and possibly his wife and kids.

Chris chokes up over murdering the children, with Harcourt picking up on his hesitance as a red flag. It comes to a head later that night when he has the chance to snipe them out at the mansion. However, he can't pull the trigger even after visual confirmation when the aliens begin feeding at the dinner table. It's clear they all need to be killed, with Murn yelling to take the shots over the comms. Luckily, Vigilante steps up and commits the murders of everyone except the father, leaving the crew vulnerable.

Judomaster ends up attacking, capturing Chris and Vigilante, so there are immediate consequences. Thankfully, they get out of this mess alive after killing the dad, but viewers are left wondering how much of Peacemaker's hard complexion was all a ruse. Hopefully, his kill record will be revealed, as well as past missions as it's obvious something scarred him so he'd create this fake persona.

It may have to do with Auggie abusing him emotionally and training him to kill without thinking, so with such a bad childhood, maybe Chris lied about his code just to give the impression of that tough, macho alpha-male he believes everyone will see as the perfect leader. Ultimately, whatever his code, he will have to adjust it soon as there are several Butterflies all over the world, hidden in plain sight to seemingly take over.

To see Chris fronting and overcompensating with his code, the first three episodes of Peacemaker are streaming now on HBO Max.
