With so much about the DCEU up in the air, the widely-appreciated popularity of Peacemaker comes as a relief to many fans of the cinematic universe. The series could well end up being a lifeboat for the universe even as retcons change much the rest of it, but if that's the case, then the lifeboat simply isn't big enough for every character in the franchise. The quirky and individualistic tone of Peacemaker makes it a better fit for some characters than others, while the sheer fun of the series means that any character that transfers into the series could be better off than ever before. But which characters should make the cut?

As a series, Peacemaker has already been cavalier about tying into and expanding the DCEU. While picking up on many plot points from The Suicide Squad, which the series spun off from, the main character also makes shoutouts to both pre-established characters like Batman and Aquaman, as well as unintroduced goofy characters like Bat-Mite or Matter-Eater Lad. Peacemaker is unafraid to tie in the larger universe, which presents a unique opportunity for past characters currently without any place to appear to transition into the series.

The Suicide Squad Main Cast

Perhaps the easiest characters to transition would be Peacemaker's fellow teammates from the Suicide Squad. Obviously, Harley Quinn proves to be the most popular and recurring character among them, having previously been in both Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey. Her psychotic banter would fit right into the series, after all, but perhaps what would prove most refreshing would be the transferal of a fan-favorite character from the film with far fewer appearances. King Shark won over audiences' hearts with his simple nature, badass design and voracious appetite, making him a great fit to appear in Peacemaker.

But the DCEU is obviously far larger than The Suicide Squad alone, and there are other properties worthy of synergizing with. As fitting as Harley Quinn would be in the series, seeing Black Canary, who appeared alongside Harley in Birds of Prey, would be a welcome addition to Peacemaker. It would also help build up the character's profile for her future installments in the series, something that might be important to do given how lost in the mix she became amidst Birds of Prey's considerable cast.

And then, of course, there's the original Suicide Squad, whose own expansive cast gave few of the characters much space to shine. Though Harley Quinn, Rick Flagg and Captain Boomerang all appeared subsequently, it is actually Katana who stands out as the character with the most untapped potential. Largely silent throughout her debut, the fate and backstory of the character remain a mystery Peacemaker could readily dive into.

While the characters who should reappear may be more open to debate, the characters that shouldn't because of a tonal difference with Peacemaker are harder to argue with. While characters like Superman, Batman or Shazam may be popular in their own right, they either have more serious or lighter tonal portrayals in the DCEU that would make their presence in Peacemaker jarring. The series largely deals on a human scale, with many of the weirder abilities of its characters still grounded in infrequent use or serving a one-off purpose.

There's really only one last character to mention which is almost a necessity for the series. Peacemaker's rivalry with Bloodsport ended in The Suicide Squad with the HBO star hospitalized and mulling over his final moments. Giving the two characters another go at each other would not only be a surefire bet for a positive fan reception but also just good storytelling in wrapping up a dangling vendetta that looms over the series at present. Peacemaker just needs to bring some of the DCEU's underutilized characters into the fold to resolve it.

To see if any other DCEU characters appear, Peacemaker releases new episodes Thursdays on HBO Max.
