Peacemaker showrunner James Gunn described Freddie Stroma's take on Adrian Chase/Vigilante character as the oddest in the show.

Gunn revealed as much during a DC FanDome 2021 virtual panel attended by CBR, saying, "Freddie, for you, you came in and you're playing the oddest character of everybody -- Vigilante/Adrian Chase -- and you're not that odd."

The actor was quick to agree, noting, "No, I'm pretty vanilla." "I love it. I really, like as soon as I started reading the sides, I was like, 'Oh, I really like this character,'" Stroma continued. "And he has just that kind of, you know, a really fun relationship with Peacemaker. And obviously, working with John [Cena] was just incredible."

Gunn also remarked during the panel that it was wild to hear Stroma speak in his native British accent, which he doesn't use in the series. Cena jumped in to note that it was actually the first time he'd heard Stroma's accent, saying that his "brain is melted."

The original version of Vigilante was introduced as a western-themed hero named Greg Sanders in Action Comics #42, which was published in November 1941. Adrian Chase and Vigilante previously appeared as two separate characters in The CW's Arrowverse. That version of Vigilante was named Vincent Sobel and was portrayed by Clayton Chitty and Johann Urb and voiced by Mick Wingert. Meanwhile, Arrow's version of Chase was portrayed by Josh Segarra.

It was announced back in December that Chris Conrad would portray Vigilante/Adrian Chase, an antihero who targets street-level criminals and mobsters and serves as a sort of sidekick and moral compass to Peacemaker in the HBO series. It was reported in May, however, that Conrad had been replaced by Stroma after the former decided to exit the project over creative differences. Stroma's previous credits include the role of Cormac McLaggen in the Harry Potter film franchise, Dickon Tarly in Game of Thrones, Adam Cromwell in UnREAL, H.G. Wells in Time After Time and Prince Friedrich in Season 1 of Bridgerton.

Ahead of this year's DC FanDome, HBO Max also shared two short clips from Peacemaker that showed the titular character and Vigilante shooting some big guns and sharing a high five.

Gunn also revealed an exclusive Peacemaker teaser during the DC FanDome panel, which shows Cena-as-Peacemaker dancing alone in tighty-whities, being hugged by a bald eagle and kicking some major butt -- among other things. Peacemaker starts streaming on HBO Max on Jan. 13, 2022.
