Fans clamoring for another James Gunn-directed Suicide Squad may find what they're looking for in the director's upcoming television series, Peacemaker.Peacemaker will apparently carry on the story from The Suicide Squad, based on recent comments from the director himself. When asked by a fan on Twitter about the chances of him directing The Suicide Squad 2, Gunn replied, "In a way the Peacemaker show is [The Suicide Squad 2]. But I'm open to [The Suicide Squad 3]."Related: The Suicide Squad's James Gunn Shares Calendar Man's Makeup Test

Peacemaker follows John Cena's character, who made his debut in the recently released The Suicide Squad. Though details on the show are sparse at the moment, Peacemaker will tell the origin story of the DC character whose dedication to world peace is so strong that he's willing to achieve it through any means necessary -- even violent ones. As such, considering Gunn is calling Peacemaker a sequel to The Suicide Squad, viewers might now expect to see a time-skipping plot that jumps back and forth between the character's past and the post-film present.

More information on Peacemaker is expected to be shared during the upcoming DC FanDome event, which is scheduled to take place virtually on Oct. 16., after a poster promoting the show's appearance at the event debuted on the official Peacemaker Twitter account. Whetting fans' appetites even further, Gunn also recently teased that the cast of Peacemaker will include another member of The Suicide Squad alongside Cena's Peacemaker and Task Force X agents Emilia Harcourt and John Economos (played by Jennifer Holland and Steve Agee, respectively).

Rumors of a solo film starring Idris Elba's Bloodsport were shut down in more recent comments from Gunn. "There is a possibility of seeing more Bloodsport in the near future - something I’d love to see!" Gunn wrote in response to a fan on Twitter, "but there is nothing currently in development."

Elba's Bloodsport, who was rumored to have been a replacement for Will Smith's Deadshot from the original 2016 Suicide Squad movie, was in fact not a re-casting of the character. Elba clarified the rumor in an interview back in August, saying, "It was quite natural for audiences or fans to think that I would be taking over the Deadshot character because the Deadshot character lived in the other movie. But I'm really satisfied that James [Gunn] didn't want to do that; I didn't want to do that. Deadshot is a great character and Will slays it, so I was really keen the audience and fans kept that rumor going. Surprise!"

Created by James Gunn and starring John Cena, Peacemaker is scheduled to premiere on the HBO Max streaming service at an unannounced date sometime in 2022.
