A Peacemaker spinoff revolving around Amanda Waller is drawing its creative minds from the Doom Patrol and Watchmen series.

Announced as a part of the future DC Universe mapped out by DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran, Waller will be a new television show starring actor Viola Davis as the titular character, reprising her role from Gunn's The Suicide Squad (2021) and Peacemaker series. While speaking with the official DC blog, Safran revealed that the spinoff will take place between the first and upcoming second season of Peacemaker, while Gunn said, "This is going to have some of the Peacemaker team in it as regulars on the show." Instead of Gunn though, Waller will be helmed by Watchmen writer Christal Henry and the creator of the Doom Patrol show, Jeremy Carver.

Watchmen and Doom Patrol Are Two Canceled DC Shows

Inspired by the comic series of the same name from writer Alan Moore and artist Dave Gibbons, Watchmen ran for nine episodes on HBO in late 2019, but did not get the green light for a second season. As for the Carver-developed Doom Patrol, it started out as a DC Universe exclusive series in 2019 before the service was reformatted into a comics-only platform. After releasing its second season simultaneously on DC Universe and HBO Max in 2020, Doom Patrol made the latter service its permanent streaming home for its following third and fourth seasons.

Earlier in Jan. 2023, both Doom Patrol and Titans were canceled on HBO Max, meaning the shows will end with their respective fourth seasons. Gunn revealed that the decision to cancel these two was made prior to him and Safran's work with DC Studios, tweeting, "The decision to end the series precedes us." Doom Patrol, Titans and Watchmen each took place within their own universes though, and were never connected to the main DCU.

Amanda Waller and the Fallout of Peacemaker, Explained

Because Waller takes place between Peacemaker Seasons 1 and 2, it seems Carver and Henry may tell the story of the A.R.G.U.S. leader dealing with her secrets exposed. The finale of Peacemaker Season 1 ended with Waller's daughter, Leota Adebayo (Danielle Brooks), publicly revealing the existence of the Suicide Squad, or "Task Force X," and how Waller is the one forcing super criminals to carry out dangerous missions for the United States government. Adebayo demanded that an investigation into her mother's activities be conducted, and the image chosen by DC to accompany the Waller announcement shows Amanda Waller in handcuffs.

As of writing, Peacemaker, Doom Patrol and Watchmen are all streaming on HBO Max. Waller does not have an official release date or window.
