Peacemaker has been renewed for Season 2.
"Creating Peacemaker has been one of the true highlights of my life, both professionally and otherwise, with John Cena and the incredible creative team around me, as well as our partners at HBO Max," showrunner James Gunn said. "To have something we all love so much be loved by the audience in turn has been a wonderful experience. I can’t wait for folks to see where Team Peacemaker goes in Season Two!"
"I am incredibly honored and humbled by the response to Peacemaker and the experience of playing this character," Cena added. "Thank you to James Gunn, Peter Safran, HBO Max, the crew, and my castmates who worked tirelessly to make this unforgettable series."
Gunn has made it no secret that he wants Peacemaker to go on for numerous seasons. "You know, there's not a big plan in place, but again, it's something that I would love to do and I know that the cast would love to do," he said in August 2021. "So we're all, you know, we haven't been picked up yet. So we'll just have to see what happens from HBO Max."
Spinning out of The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker centers on John Cena's Christopher Smith, who's forced to work with ARGUS in order to stay out of prison. What he soon learns is working with ARGUS means fighting an alien enemy called Butterflies, that can commandeer human bodies and imbue them with super-strength. Along for the ride are fellow Suicide Squad stars Steve Agee as John Economos and Jennifer Holland as Emilia Harcourt, as well as Danielle Brooks as Leota Adebayo and Chuwudi Iwuji as Clemson Murn, with Freddie Stroma as Adrian Chase/Vigilante.
When previously asked by Peacemaker, of all characters, was given his own DCEU show, Gunn explained, "In the [The Suicide Squad]... Harley gets a really complete story about herself, she gets a complete arc. Bloodsport gets a complete story. Rick Flag gets a complete story. Ratcatcher 2 gets a complete story. They all learn something about themselves -- sometimes good things, sometimes bad things -- but Peacemaker is a douche and he stays a douche and he's an asshole in the movie. But I think there's something below that."
Peacemaker's Season 1 finale arrives on HBO Max Thursday, Feb. 17.
