Peacemaker director James Gunn is reportedly working on one or more secret DC projects for Warner Bros. Discovery.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gunn, the writer/director behind DC Films' The Suicide Squad and the creator of HBO Max's Peacemaker series, is looking to add a new DC project to his slate. He and Shazam! producer Peter Safran are currently in talks with Warners Bros. for a new movie (possibly more than one) for Gunn to helm. Although there are currently no comments or official announcements from Warner Bros. regarding Gunn's mysterious new project, an insider has observed that DC's intellectual assets are being carved out for potential projects. "DC is definitely in play," the insider stated.

Premiering in January 2022, Peacemaker picked up where Gunn's 2021 film The Suicide Squad left off. The eight-episode series saw John Cena reprise his role as Christopher Smith/Peacemaker and join the A.R.G.U.S. black ops squad for a mission known as Project Butterfly. HBO Max ordered the second season of Peacemaker in February 2022, with Gunn returning to write and direct. In August, Gunn was asked about the show's status in the DC Extended Universe to which he confirmed that "Peacemaker is still and will continue to be DCEU."

James Gunn Leans Into the DCEU

Along with Peacemaker Season 2 and these mysterious new DC projects, Gunn is currently working on two more DCEU series which he's said are in "various phases of development." While the details regarding the other two television series are unknown, it is rumored that one will focus on either A.R.G.U.S. or Viola Davis' Amanda Waller. Gunn responded to these rumors, saying, "There's a lot of stories out there about what's happening and some of them are accurate, some of them are not."

Besides his involvement in the DCEU, Gunn is also known for his work on Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy film franchise and has two projects currently in post-production: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, set to hit theaters May 5, 2023, and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, which will premiere on Disney+ in December. The director has stated that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is intended to mark the end of this version of the superhero team and will also be Gunn's final contribution to the franchise after 10 years.

In a recent interview, Gunn commented on how his directing style has changed throughout the three-film installment. "Different films have different vibes," the filmmaker said, "I personally am looser than I used to be. I often change stuff on set, which was heretical to me around [Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1] time."

Peacemaker Season 1 is available to stream on HBO Max.
