In an official sizzle reel that aired during tonight's broadcast of the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards, HBO Max debuted the first official footage of Peacemaker, its upcoming Suicide Squad spinoff series starring John Cena.

The sizzle reel shows off some of the new titles coming to HBO Max in the near future, including films like Dune and The Matrix Resurrections; new seasons of established shows like Succession, Insecure and Euphoria; and entirely new shows like And Just Like That..., The Sex Lives of College Girls and, of course, Peacemaker.

In our first look at Peacemaker, the eponymous anti-hero steps out of a star-spangled muscle car with a custom license plate that reads, "PSS-MKR." (This car was previously seen in a Peacemaker poster released to promote the upcoming DC FanDome virtual convention.) He then meets the rest of the cast at a restaurant. Peacemaker is asked why exactly he's wearing his costume to dinner, to which he replies that it's not a costume, it's "a uniform."

Set to premiere on HBO Max early next year, Peacemaker is an eight-episode series that serves as a follow-up to writer-director James Gunn's DC Extended Universe film The Suicide Squad, which itself premiered in theaters and on HBO Max earlier this year on Aug. 5. The film marked the live-action debut of the DC Comics character Christopher Smith/Peacemaker, who was originally created by Joe Gill and Pat Boyette and first appeared 1966's Fightin' 5 #40.

Towards the end of The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker is shot and seemingly killed by Bloodsport (Idris Elba). However, a post-credits scene reveals that he survived his injuries and that John Economos (Steve Agee) and Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland) have been tasked with recruiting Peacemaker to "save the fucking world," having seemingly been saddled with the job after double-crossing Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) amid Task Force X's mission in Corto Maltese.

In addition to Cena, Agee and Holland, the main cast of HBO Max's Peacemaker includes Danielle Brooks as Leota Adebayo, Robert Patrick as Auggie Smith (Peacemaker's father), Freddie Stroma as Adrian Chase/Vigilante and Chukwudi Iwuji as Clemson Murn. The series is expected to delve into Peacemaker's origins. Gunn wrote all eight episodes of the series and directed five of them, including the premiere and the finale.
