WandaVision star Paul Bettany thinks the show offered the perfect encapsulation of the relationship between the synthezoid and Scarlet Witch -- but he's not ready to say goodbye to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Bettany spoke with Deadline for its Emmy coverage, as WandaVision landed 23 nominations, including one for the actor and his lead performance. In terms of the series finale, which sees one version of Vision fade away and another fly away, Bettany discussed how it closed one chapter but potentially set up another.
"It was a beautiful culmination for all these things Lizzie and I have done together," Bettany said. "We really found a lane for ourselves, and this was different in tone from those movies. But you never know with Marvel, whether you’re done or not. So I don’t want to call it the end yet. This was one of the most creative experiences of my life, joyful and free, making this show. To see it embraced by an audience the way it was, was so wonderful."
There's been no word yet on if Bettany will return as either version of Vision in a future MCU project. But given that White Vision is still out in the world and Wanda heard the voices of her kids at the end of WandaVision -- meaning some version of her Vision could also still exist -- it's hard to imagine the actor won't return to the role at some point.
As for the other characters from the show, Kathryn Hahn's Agatha Harkness has already been teased as returning and Scarlet Witch will next appear in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Meanwhile, Tommy and Billy are likely going to feature in a Young Avengers project.
Bettany also spoke about the audacity of the show and how challenging it was for him. "When [head writer] Matt [Shakman] said we’re going to do it in front of a live audience, I thought, no we’re not," Bettany said. "But he was right. It gave us a project quality that feels very similar to that era, which I don’t think I was clever enough to achieve, to be somebody who works for an audience."
All nine episodes of WandaVision are now streaming on Disney+. The 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards airs Sept. 19 on CBS and Paramount+.
