Disney and Lucasfilm's Star Wars: Rogue Squadron may not have taken flight yet, but director Patty Jenkins assures that the project is still on the runway."I orginally left Rogue Squadron after a long productive development process when it became clear it couldn't happen soon enough and I did not want to delay [Wonder Woman 3] any further," Jenkins said in a statement on Twitter. "When I did, Lucasfilm asked me to consider coming back to RS after WW3, which I was honored to do, so I agreed. They made a new deal with me. In fact, I am still on it and that project has been in active development ever since."RELATED: The Delayed Star Wars: Rogue Squadron Could Easily Be the Franchise's Top Gun

Despite its active status, however, Jenkins says she is not sure if Rogue Squadron will get off the ground. "I don't know if it will happen or not. We never do until the development process is complete but I look forward to its potential ahead." The director's update comes just months after Lucasfilm removed the project from its release schedule.

The galaxy far, far away is alive and well on Disney+ with shows like The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Andor, but many fans are longing for the franchise's return to the big screen. In addition to Rogue Squadron, there are currently five confirmed Star Wars films in development -- one from Taika Waititi, one from writer Damon Lindelof and director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, one from Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige, one from director J.D. Dillard and writer Matt Owens and one from director Shawn Levy. Waititi's is said to be the furthest along in the development process.

However, for as many Star Wars films that have been announced in recent years, there have also been several lost in development or canceled altogether, including separate trilogies from Rian Johnson and David Benioff and DB Weiss. Initially thought to be canceled, Johnson recently revealed that he is still in talks with Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy over his proposed trilogy.

Jenkins No Longer On Wonder Woman 3

In December, the Hollywood Reporter revealed that Warner Bros. Discovery and DC Studios were no longer interested in developing Wonder Woman 3 with Jenkins. Days later, another report suggested that it was Jenkins who left the film after refusing to retool her most recent version of the script. In addition to her update on Rogue Squadron, the director dispelled the rumors surrounding her departure from Wonder Woman 3.

"I never walked away," Jenkins elaborated. "I was open to considering anything asked of me. It was my understanding there was nothing I could do to move anything forward at this time. DC is obviously buried in changes they are having to make, so I understand these decisions are difficult right now."

Jenkins also took time to thank fans for their support of her previous efforts on the Wonder Woman films. "Wonder Woman fans are often not the most visible in the media and online, but I want you to know that we have always seen and celebrated your importance," she said. "You are the best and most loving people and I look forward to always celebrating you."
