After bringing the iconic DC Comics superheroine to the silver screen as the director of 2017's Wonder Woman, Patty Jenkins returned to direct and co-write Wonder Woman 1984. A third solo film for the Amazon Princess is set to happen at some point in the future, and Jenkins recently revealed her one major requirement for filming it.
During an interview with The New York Times, Jenkins was asked if she would still direct Wonder Woman 3 after directing the Star Wars film Rogue Squadron.
"We'll see what happens," Jenkins replied. "I really don't know. I know that I'd love to do the third one if the circumstances were right and there was still a theatrical model possible. I don't know that I would if there wasn't." Jenkins previously stated she was "not sure" about moving forward on the project, despite having already come up with its story.
Jenkins announced earlier this year that she would leave the Wonder Woman franchise after Wonder Woman 3. In addition, a spinoff focused on the Amazons is in the works, which Jenkins revealed will help set up Wonder Woman 3. Jenkins also said that a potential animated spinoff series could be just around the corner.
Prior to its Christmas release, Wonder Woman 1984 has been positively received by critics who saw the film early. Many especially enjoyed its story and humor.
As an archaeologist, Diana who works at the Smithsonian Museum, is a Wonder Woman who has extraordinary superpowers, said to be the strongest hero in the world. In 1984, Wonder Woman is in desperate deadly danger in face of an enormous conspiracy of the businessman Max, who sings loudly to fulfill people's desires, and a mysterious foe, Cheetah. Can Wonder Woman stop the world’s collapse alone?
Directed and co-written by Patty Jenkins, Wonder Woman 1984 stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Kristen Wiig, Pedro Pascal and Natasha Rothwell. The film arrives in theaters and HBO Max Dec. 25.
