Paramount Pictures has acquired the rights to "Beyblade" -- the Japanese spinning toys turned multimedia franchise -- with plans to develop a live-action feature.
Deadline reports that Mary Parent ("Godzilla," "Pacific Rim") will produce the movie through her Disruption Entertainment, which has a first-look deal with the studio.
Debuting in 2000, the customizable Beyblade toys were inspired by traditional Japanese spinning tops. A manga by Takao Aoki about kids who battle each other using Beyblades was adapted in 2001 as an anime series, which spawned two sequels and a pair of spinoffs.
Released by Takara Tomy in Japan, the toys were licensed in 2001 by Hasbro.
