Paramount Shifts Hansel & Gretel From March 2012 to January 2013

Paramount Pictures and MGM have pushed back the release of Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters by nearly a year, from March 2, 2012, to Jan. 11, 2013. Directed by Tommy Wirkola, the film stars Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton as the fairy-tale characters transformed by the harrowing experience at the gingerbread house into ruthless bounty hunters.

The Hollywood Reporter contends the reasons for the move are tri-fold: with the box-office performances of Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol and the micro-budget Devil Inside, Paramount is having a good fiscal quarter, proving January can be lucrative; the 3D elements of Hansel & Gretel are only now coming in, meaning there’s little time to market them; and the studio wants the movie to benefit from Renner’s increased profile thanks to The Avengers and The Bourne Legacy, which open in May and August, respectively.

Wirkola, who also directed Dead Snow, has said that while Hansel & Gretel contains comedic elements, “it’s also very, very dark, and bloodthirsty and there’s a lot of cursing. It’s kind of got a [Quentin] Tarantino feel, really.”
