Maverick's return to the skies in the Top Gun: Maverick has been delayed by a year as Paramount announces a later release date for the sequel.

The follow-up to the popular 1986 film has been pushed back to June 2020 from its original July 2019 release date. The delay is reportedly due to the extensive flight sequences and visual effects work being more challenging than originally anticipated by the production.

Tom Cruise and producer Jerry Bruckheimer have been interested in creating a sequel to Top Gun for decades with the film finally greenlit by Paramount in June 2017. The sequel reportedly sees an older Maverick facing his legacy as fighter pilots give way to drone aircraft while he is reunited with the son of his former wingman, Goose, who has followed in his late father's footsteps.

Principal photography on Top Gun: Maverick began this past May taking a short break for Cruise to complete his promotional commitments for Mission: Impossible -- Fallout. The film reteams Cruise with filmmaker Kosinski who had previously worked with the star on 2013's Oblivion.
