Paramount, Michael Bay Reteam For ‘New Take’ on Transformers

Confirming reports emerging out of Toy Fair, Paramount Pictures and director Michael Bay have announced they’re reteaming for a fourth installment of the blockbuster Transformers franchise, set to open June 29, 2014.

“Steven Spielberg and I are working on a whole new reimagining of Transformers, the fourth installment,” Bay wrote on his website. “We have been working on the idea for a few months. I’m excited about where it’s headed.”

That of course is a complete turnaround from earlier indications that 2011’s Transformers: Dark of the Moon would be Bay’s final movie in the Hasbro toy-based series. Ah, what a difference a $1.24 billion global box office makes.

Transformers 4 — Paramount describes it only as “a new take on the Transformers franchise” — is part of Bay’s new two-picture deal with the studio that begins with Pain and Gain, his long-discussed $20 million movie based on a 1999 Miami New Times article about bodybuilders who kidnap a businessman only to be hunted down by an investigator the victim hires. Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson star in the film, set to begin production in early spring.

“I’m extremely excited to simplify my film career this spring with a great character piece,” Bay said.
