Paramount Eying Optimus Prime Spinoff -- If Bumblebee Succeeds

For its Transformers franchise, Paramount is considering making an Optimus Prime solo film if the Bumblebee movie turns out to be successful.

There may be some fight left in the Transformers franchise after all. After Transformers: The Last Knight failed to light up the box office and effectively put a halt to future Transformers films, Paramount is still interested in keeping the saga of the Autobotos and the Decepticons going.

The upcoming Bumblebee solo film is the last planned Transformers production for the time being, but that may change if the spinoff film proves to be successful. In fact, Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura has confirmed that Paramount is considering green lighting a solo Optimus Prime film if Bumblebee is well-received.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, di Bonaventura revealed that while they have ideas for a Bumblebee sequel, they would also love nothing more than to make a solo film about the Autobots' fearless leader. "I’d certainly like to do that," the Producer revealed. "It would be a very different kind of movie than a Bumblebee movie, but equally interesting and different."

Optimus Prime has been the lead Autobot in all five Transformers films, but fans of the original cartoon series still believe that the character hasn't received his proper due. There is a lot of backstory to the character, and a Cybertron-based film showcasing how Optimus rose through the ranks to become the legendary leader that he is would certainly make for a fascinating film.

Directed by Travis Knight (Kubo and the Two Strings) from a script by Christina Hodson, Bumblebee stars Hailee Steinfeld, John Cena, Jorge Lendeborg Jr., Pamela Adlon, Jason Drucker, Abby Quinn, Rachel Crow, Ricardo Hoyos and Gracie Dzienny. The film is scheduled for release on Dec. 21.
