For this May's Asian Pacific American Heritage Month (APAHM), Panda Express is giving away a free exclusive comic book by Asian-American cartoonist Gene Luen Yang, a MacArthur Genius and the National Ambassador for Young People's Literature, and artist Sonny Liew.

According to Yahoo!, Yang will team with Liew for an exclusive issue titled "Shadow Hero Comics" #1. The comic will feature the Green Turtle, the first Chinese-American superhero, a character that Yang and Liew revived from the Golden Age of comics for their bestselling graphic novel "The Shadow Hero." Originally created in 1944 by Chu F. Hing for Blazing Comics, the Green Turtle ran for five issues before falling into obscurity among the era's comic boom. Yang and Liew revived the character with a six-part origin for "The Shadow Hero" in 2014.

In Yang's revival, the Green Turtle is Hank Chu, a young Chinese-American man working in his family's small grocery store in California. "Shadow Hero Comics" #1 will pick up where "The Shadow Hero" left off and see Hank balancing his normal life with the modicum of fame the Green Turtle is gaining within the community. According to Yang, "Sonny and I are so excited to work with Panda Express. Together, we created 'Shadow Hero Comics #1' to celebrate not just Asian Pacific American heroes, but all of the heroes in our lives. A hero can be anyone who inspires us to never give up. We hope stories like ours will encourage young readers to embrace their own originality and never give up on themselves, no matter what the odds may be."

Asian Pacific American Heritage Month was designated by Congress in 2009 to recognize the contributions of Americans of Asian and Pacific Islander ancestry to the Nation's history. In celebration of APAHM, a free copy of "Shadow Hero Comics" #1 is free with the purchase of a kids' meal at any Panda Express location. It can also be downloaded at pandaexpress.com/originality.
