Palahniuk’s Invisible Monsters Nabs Skins Director Samir Rehem

I’m of the opinion that Fight Club author Chuck Palahniuk’s best work remains (for now) in his early days, which means I’m pretty excited to hear today’s news about progress being made on a planned adaptation of his 1999 book Invisible Monsters. Variety reports that TV director Samir Rehem has signed on to helm the film, with Palahniuk “weighing in with suggestions on how to stylize the story for a visual medium.” They’re seeking financing for the project.

Rehem is best known as the director of recent episodes of Degrassi: The Next Generation and MTV’s take on the U.K. import series Skins. Cameron MacLaren is developing the script Rehem will be working with. Variety impressively manages to synopsize the story in a single sentence: “Story follows a disfigured ex-fashion model, a pill-popping drama queen and a sexually confused vice operative as they embark on a road trip hoping to reinvent themselves.”

That’s pretty much the long and short of it, although anyone who’s read the story knows there’s a lot going on beneath the surface for the writer and director to play with.
