Few things are certain in a world beset by gigantic creatures spawned from an otherworldly portal in the ocean’s darkest depths, but one thing is for sure: You probably don’t want to mess with the robots tasked with taking down those titanic kaiju. They’re very good at their work.
An on-set Instagram photo from “Pacific Rim: Uprising” director Steven S. Knight reiterates as much. The photo shows a serious looking fence emblazoned with a Pan Pacific Defense Corps warning sign denoting an upcoming restricted area accessible only to authorized personnel. Of course, something has burned right through the fence and passed beyond its borders.
The Pan Pacific Defense Corps is the United Nations-devised group from the original “Pacific Rim” that was tasked with defending the world from the encroaching sea kaiju using Jaegers, giant robots designed specifically to destroy the monsters. Shatterdomes, Pac Pacific Defense Corps international stations, were constructed in locations like Hong Kong, Russia and the United States as a first line of defense against kaiju incursions.
There’s no telling if the sign in DeKnight’s picture is from a Shatterdome (and which one, for that matter), or if it is from a smaller outpost. All that is apparent is that someone has broken in, and they’re likely heading for a Jaeger.
Directed by Steven S. DeKnight, “Pacific Rim: Uprising” is a production of Legendary Pictures starring John Boyega, Scott Eastwood, Cailee Spaeny and Jing Tian. The big monster action movie debuts in theaters February 23, 2018.
