'Pacific Rim 2' in Motion with Steven S. DeKnight as Director

The "Pacific Rim" sequel is a go -- with someone other than Guillermo del Toro as director. Deadline reports that Steven S. DeKnight will make his feature film directorial debut with Legendary Pictures' "Pacific Rim 2," with a script by Jon Spaihts.

DeKnight is a name familiar to genre fans, as the creator of Starz's "Spartacus" franchise, the showrunner of "Daredevil" season one and his work on Joss Whedon-created shows "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Angel" and "Dollhouse." Del Toro will serve as a producer of the sequel.

The original "Pacific Rim," released in 2013, was directed by del Toro and co-written by del Toro and Travis Beacham. The film -- pitting human-opreated "Jaegers" against monstrous "Kaijus" -- was a hit with fans and grossed $411 million worldwide, but only $102 million domestically. Development of a sequel has been on-again, off-again, but this latest news looks to be the most optimistic word yet. No release date has been set.
