Ahead the anticipated box-office domination by Oz the Great and Powerful this weekend, Disney has already begun work on a sequel to the prequel to The Wizard of Oz prequel.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mitchell Kapner, who developed the story and wrote the early drafts of the Sam Raimi film, has been hired to tackle the follow-up.
Oz stars James Franco as a huckster illusionist who finds himself in the title fantasy world. He meets a unique group of characters including Munchkins, a nice flying monkey voiced by Zach Braff, and a trio of witches played by Mila Kunis, Michelle Williams and Rachel Weisz. The people of Oz expect Franco’s character to be a great, heroic Wizard, a role he fills at first to survive, although he just might evolve into the real thing.
The world of Oz was introduced in L. Frank Baum’s 1900 children’s novel The Wizard of Oz. While he wasn’t exactly thrilled about writing sequels, Baum decided to pen them after receiving numerous requests from children, resulting in 13 follow-ups. Since then the story has inspired everything from stage plays and movies to comic books and additional sequels penned by other people thanks to the original work’s pubic domain status.
