While it's tempting to think of the heroes of Overwatch as a "one size fits all" model for players, Blizzard has gone to great lengths to make sure each character has their own unique playstyle and design. The result is a roster that is diverse, with different characters suiting different players, from newbies to esports veterans.

While it may seem like each player has to know the ins-and-outs of the entire roster, newcomers should know that some heroes are better than others at completing specific tasks and fulfilling certain roles. Overwatch also features several characters who are quite accessible to new players. Let's take a look at the heroes that help flatten the game's learning curve.

Mercy (Support Role)

Widely regarded as having the most simple support kit in the game, Mercy is frequently selected by players who want to make a difference but don't have thousands of hours of FPS experience under their belts. If your playstyle is enabling your team without putting yourself into harm's way, this is the character for you.

Mercy's "Guardian Angel" ability allows her to zip to nearby teammates (even dead ones) to patch them up or bring them back to the playing field. Her ability to resurrect players can have a game-changing impact, and it's why she's picked so often. Her interface allows for a straightforward gaming experience: boost your team as they output damage, or heal them as they take it.

She's mobile, consistent and her ultimate move, "Valkyrie," makes her capable of supporting her entire team at once provided they are within range. On her own, Mercy can regain health and also enjoys a fairly strong pistol which can deal an unexpected amount of damage. Combined with her flying skills, these traits make sure she won't go down without a fight.

Soldier 76 (Damage Role)

Clearly a nod at other franchises, Soldier 76 plays similarly to modern military shooters, meaning he will feel familiar to anyone migrating to Overwatch from another FPS. Fans of the typical run-and-gun playstyle of titles like Call of Duty should feel right at home with this character.

Soldier 76's gun has a fairly high rate of fire, with the only drawback being its recoil, which pulls the crosshair upwards the longer he shoots. It's precise and, while it carries some damage drop-off at range, it's effective at poking enemies who can't find cover. His other weapon, the "Helix Rocket," is useful as a splash damage projectile, which for new players, is a very forgiving type of ammunition designed to damage nearby opponents who may not have received a direct hit.

The "Biotic Field" ability allows Solider 76 to function fairly independently of healers, as it will patch him up without their assistance. It is also able to heal nearby teammates. Finally, Solider 76's ultimate move, "Tactical Visor," takes the trouble out of aiming by target-locking opponents who are within range and line of sight, which makes taking out multiple enemies easy.

Reinhardt (Tank Role)

While advanced players may seek a more impactful tank at higher ranks, players who are new to the game may find the straightforward no-frills approach to Reinhardt's playstyle easier to enjoy. Pick him if you're the kind of player who likes to lead their team into battle.

In addition to a large health pool, Reinhardt has a large barrier, which he uses to protect himself and his team from damage. His passive ability "Steadfast" makes it difficult for other characters to move him, and his main method of damage (swinging his hammer) can easily take chunks of health off his opponent's life bar.

Reinhardt also has a projectile that can go through shields and multiple enemies, making it an effective long range attack. Finally, when push comes to shove, his "Charge" ability makes quick work of anyone it comes into contact with, killing most characters instantly.

Brigitte (Support Role)

While she lacks any sort of long range attack, Brigitte's playstyle is incredibly effective at short distances. She's designed for intimate combat, which heals teammates within range simply by beating up the other team. If you're the kind of player who hates reloading and wants to march forward, give her a go.

Brigitte is simple to use: she goes forward, wails on the enemy and heals her nearby teammates when she does. To help her get into range, she'll put up a small shield up (similar to Reinhardt's barrier) which soaks damage. She also has her ability "Shield Bash" to help close short distances quickly. "Shield Bash" is also capable of stunning enemies, useful for stopping foes that are in the middle of using their ultimate abilities.

Brigitte's own ultimate, "Rally," gives everyone within its range an extra coating of armor, making them incredibly hard to kill. Her shield, healing and stun abilities make her a key player in any toe-to-toe team fight which, when paired with the right combination of tanks, can really assert dominance over the course of a match.

Reaper (Damage Role)

For most new players, instinct will tell them to seek out the enemy and destroy them. Reaper fits that playstyle perfectly, especially at lower levels, where his light mechanical demands and high damage output make for a character who can dominate round after round. Reaper's passive ability allows him to heal whenever he does damage, which, as he carries a shotgun, means he's free to spray into enemies at close range with relative impunity.

Of his two other abilities, "Shadow Step" is able to get him out of a jam quickly, transforming him to an invulnerable cloud as he escapes from fights that don't favor him. This allows Reaper to reposition to nearly any area he can walk on within line of sight, a tool which both saves him from flying off of the map and allows him to get higher ground and wait  to pounce on his opponent.

Reapers' ultimate ability, "Death Blossom," creates a hail of gunfire around him in a sphere shape. Anyone caught in it is almost immediately eliminated, making it a high-impact ultimate to use. Fortunately, Reaper is also able to regain health during it, making him an incredibly challenging foe to stop.
