There are countless overpowered characters in the DC Universe. In fact, in the comics, there’s a character called “The Presence” who is essentially the equivalent of God for the DC characters. However, what makes a superhero truly a super hero is that their actions are heroic.

While some DC Comics characters are superpowered, they use those abilities for evil, rather than good. Some of the superheroes, though, have such a maddening amount of superpowers that they’re beyond stopping at this point. DC Comics has no shortage of overpowered characters, but some heroes take things to an entirely new level.

10 Batman

the batman bruce wayne

Of all the DC heroes, Batman is one of the most interesting. Underneath all the armor and technology that Bruce Wayne uses to make himself Batman, he is still just a man underneath it all. However, this is a man who doesn’t even need to sleep. Bruce Wayne is supposed to be a human man, but he says that all he does is meditate, and he eschews human relationships. It’s clear that Bruce Wayne is far too powerful to be a normal man. It’s even more obvious that he is overpowered; if he’s supposed to be the human factor to all of this, he’s a poor example of it.

9 Doctor Manhattan

Most consider Dr. Manhattan to be outside the DC Universe, but he is technically a part of it, and he’s incredibly overpowered. The scientist Jonathan Osterman was, like Bruce Wayne, once just a man. After the experiments go wrong, however, Doctor Manhattan becomes someone who sees himself even above mankind.

He leaves the Earth behind, showing that he’s become exponentially more powerful than any of the humans he leaves behind in the process. Not only that, he sees himself as above the problems of man, which makes him not much of a hero at all, to some.

8 Superboy

Jonathan Samuel Kent is the son of Superman — also known as Clark Kent — and Lois Lane. Despite being a child, he’s capable of fighting alongside his father, Superman. Like the Robins — Damian Wayne being Jon Kent’s partner, another of the Super Sons — Jon is a superpowered kid who has no right doing any of the things he does on a regular basis. Jon is part human and he should be living a normal kid life. Unfortunately for him, he has as many powers as his father does, and has to be fighting crime at such a young age. It’s clear that he’s far too overpowered for his age and position.

7 Aquaman

DC Aquaman Tidal Wave Trident

Anyone who reads Aquaman in the comics can tell that Arthur Curry is more powerful than he lets on. He may be the son of a lighthouse keeper, but he’s also a superhero and the king of Atlantis. He has incredible superpowers and he’s a member of the Justice League; he can command the oceans, which make up most of the Earth; he can also communicate with ocean life and manipulate them at will.

On top of all of this, he’s capable of moving at impossible speeds at even more impossible ocean depths, which means he’s even stronger than people realize. If he’s capable of withstanding the weight of the ocean, he’s more overpowered than audiences will ever know, either.

6 Shazam

Marvel family cover with Shazam

Both Shazam Jr. (once Captain Marvel Jr.) and Shazam (once Captain Marvel) are incredibly powerful heroes. In fact, so is Mary Marvel and the entire Marvel Family — also known as the Shazam Family, or the Shazamily. However, it’s clear that Shazam has even more power than meets the eye. Many speculate that he’s as powerful as Superman, and there’s a wealth of evidence in the comics to back that claim up. However, Billy Batson is ultimately just a child, and being so overpowered is just as dangerous for him as it would be for Jon Kent, Damian Wayne, or any other child who has to fight bad guys instead of just having a childhood.

5 Supergirl

Supergirl Girl of Steel

Supergirl has come from the planet Krypton, much like her cousin Superman. As she’s looking for Kal-El, Kara Zor-El gets knocked off course and ends up on Earth too late to help raise Clark Kent from youth. Instead, she has to act on her own and becomes a superhero in her own right. However, being that she, too, is from Krypton, she gets her abilities from the yellow sun, just like Superman does. While she’s not considered as major of a player in the DC Comics game as her cousin Superman is, she’s just as powerful as him. It makes it obvious that she’s more overpowered because she’s not used well enough for her abilities.

4 Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman is literally not even born of humans, or any living species. She was sculpted from clay and granted life by the gods, which makes her arguably more powerful than almost anybody else alive. She also operates according to her own moral compass, and is accountable to nobody but herself.

If Diana Prince decides that what she is going to do is the right thing, she will do it. In the past, she’s defeated the entire Justice League just to stop her from doing what she wants. Ultimately, Diana is one of the most overpowered DC heroes, and with some of the least accountability.

3 Martian Manhunter

Martian Manhunter Alex Ross

There are countless aliens that pop up throughout the DC Universe, and one of those famous aliens has his home planet in his name. J’onn J’onzz is also known as the Martian Manhunter, and he’s one of the strongest characters in the entire DC Universe canon. Like some of his fellow most powerful heroes, he’s one of the original seven members of the Justice League, and he’s accountable to his team and himself only. The Martian Manhunter has always been an impossibly powerful figure, but now he’s more overpowered than ever. Fans have realized he could be literally anyone at any time, given his ability to transform and mimic.

2 Superman

Action Comics #583 cover to "Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?"

When it comes to the most powerful heroes of all, Superman most frequently tops the list. It might be cliche to say at this point, but Clark Kent is undoubtedly one of the most overpowered heroes who has ever been created. Early on in his character history, it seemed that he just accumulated every power his writers and creators thought of. Now, this has grown into Clark Kent becoming pretty much the most powerful being of all. In fact, he’s so powerful that barely anybody can kill him — and, even after he’s been defeated, he really never fully stays dead.

1 The Spectre

DC The Spectre

The Spectre is the agent of The Presence, the literal assassin of God and the embodiment of the Spirit of Vengeance. Also known as Aztar, The Spectre frequently needs to be hosted by a human, and heroes like Hal Jordan have been that host time and again. The Spectre tries to do good things, offering his power and advice and guidance to those he occupies, trying to do the will of The Presence and his own at the same time. With such immense cosmic powers, it’s obvious that, even more than Superman, The Spectre is the overpowered monstrosity of DC Comics above all others.
