The Outriders demo proves that gamers have a lot to look forward to when the full game launches on April 1. The sci-fi RPG features a lush multiplayer world and a captivating storyline that pulls players in from the very start. However, while Outriders is living up to its high expectations, its character customization options are somewhat bare-bones, especially when compared to other games in the genre.

Outriders is full of enthralling features that will entertain RPG fans over for hours. Its deep class ability system and apparel options are seemingly limitless, allowing gamers to create an Outrider that feels like their own. However, in terms of physical appearances, Outriders is minimalistic. While nearly every other customization facet oozes with creativity, players' options for facial features and other physical attributes are quite limited.

When it comes to character customization in games, many players expect to be able to create a replica of themselves. Games like Outriders can be more enjoyable when gamers feel they are playing in their own skin. Unfortunately, Outriders only provides eight heads options for both male and female Outriders, none of which allows players to modify any existing facial features. This is rudimentary, and it doesn't mesh well with the rest of the game's vast modification options. If gamers could adjust the size of their character's lips, eyebrows, nose and eye shape, it would allow them to create the Outriders of their dreams.

Outriders prides itself on its deep mechanics and detailed inventory. It does a great job of giving players creative control when it comes to their character's abilities and apparel, so this makes the lack of options in terms of other physical attributes all the more notable and out of place. Giving players fewer than ten heads and hairstyles in a game that emphasizes customization isn't ideal.

Because of this, it is also common for parties to be comprised of members who have nearly identical facial features. Expanding the character customization system would give players more freedom over their Outrider, making them feel exclusive and unique, as if they were an extension of the player themselves.

Although the Outriders demo's customization abilities feel limited, it could be a completely different story when it comes to the full game. There's a chance the developers will expand the customization options for launch, giving fans the detailed experience they are hoping for. It would enhance the immersion experience ten-fold while making the game stand out among the many other sci-fi shooters that have released over the last few years.

Outriders is shaping up to be another great RPG from Square Enix, but its restrictive character customization system is a weak point right now. Square Enix and People Can Fly should expand the customization system and give players more physical attributes to work with. While it may seem like a minor critique, expanding customization options would make this otherwise impressive and promising game an even more engaging experience.
