In Season 1 of Netflix's Outer Banks, young John B (Chase Stokes) seemed to have gotten vindication for the death of his dad, Big John, after he found the gold from the Royal Merchant, a British ship that sunk off North Carolina. He and his team of treasure hunters made the discovery at the Crain Estate. However, John B was screwed over by Ward Cameron, the father of the girl he was dating, Sarah. This kickstarted a chain of tragic events, which ultimately led to Sheriff Peterkin getting shot and John B's escape plan being ruined.

Who Killed Sheriff Peterkin?

Peterkin helped Ward get the compass John B's dad left behind, as she owed him a favor. However, she was getting tired of Ward's conniving and finally decided to move in, since she cared for John and wanted to help him stay out Ward's way. With evidence against him mounting, Ward killed Big John after they fell out over the location of the gold. Peterkin then arrived at the airstrip, where Ward was trying to force Sarah on board his plane so he could take the gold to the Bahamas.

Peterkin made it clear she wasn't there for John B, who tried to save Sarah. She was there to make Ward pay for how he manipulated the district with his power, wealth and influence. However, before she could make the arrest, Ward's junkie son, Rafe, showed up and shot her through the torso -- a wound that proved fatal.

What Did Rafe and Ward Do Afterwards?

Outer Banks' Rafe Ward and Charles Easten

John B and Sarah went on the lam, while Ward radioed in and framed John for the shooting. It didn't help that John was already an island misfit, running into trouble with the law so many times as an abandoned teen trying to find the treasure and truth about his dad. The island then embarked on a manhunt for John, with Ward covering up what Rafe did.

Rafe was trying to get back in his dad's good graces, and shockingly, when Sarah tried to relay the info the law enforcement, Ward and Co. made her look like a lovestruck teen trying to cover for John. It wrecked his plans of escaping Kildare and starting a new life with his friends, the Pogues, especially as JJ needed something away from his abusive dad and Pope needed a career after blowing his scholarship interview to help John.

How Did This Break John B?

Now a fugitive, John B stole the one gold nugget he had back at his home from the cops. He then got the Phantom, JJ's dad's speedboat, but sadly, Sarah missed the checkout point, though they later met back up. But while it seemed like they'd be making a victorious run down to Mexico, they were forced into a storm by Ward and the police.

John B, via radio, made it clear he wasn't coming back. In fact, he'd come someday for revenge, as Ward ruined his life. Sadly, their speedboat got caught up in the storm and the season ended with them adrift at sea. Luckily, a ship picked them up and was heading to the Bahamas. John B started plotting how to find Ward's gold, but with Sarah with him, it'll be tough, as he's a wanted felon with only a single piece of gold to his name that he can't -- or won't -- pawn.

Outer Banks Season 2 will continue John B's story when it premieres on July 30.
