Throughout Ouran High School Host Club's twenty-six episode run, viewers come to know and love the quirks that make up each individual member of the club. While they can seem shallow at first, with the exception of fan-favorite Haruhi, of course- they all grow into lovable characters who come to understand more about the world around them besides what they were born into. The manga goes even further into this development, so there's lots of little tidbits that even dedicated fans might have missed.

At first, this might not seem like a fact that fans wouldn't be aware of- his name is Tamaki Suoh, right?

Well, yes and no. That is the shortened version of his legal name that he goes by, but Tamaki's full name is quite the mouthful. It's also never mentioned even a single time in the anime, so if that's all the knowledge of the series that you have, it's pretty much impossible to figure out. The King's full legal name is actually Renè Tamaki Richard de Grantaine Suoh. See why he prefers to keep it short and sweet?

9 Differences In Design

The Host Club King's design is pretty iconic- it's hard to forget his princely smile or his charming violet eyes that tend to win over pretty much every girl in the series- even Haruhi, given enough time, despite his truly idiotic nature. However, what fans might not be aware of is the fact that his eyes actually aren't the striking violet used in the anime. In the manga, Tamaki's eyes are actually an ocean-blue, and both fit him quite well.

It's also noted in the manga once that Tamaki has 'light brown' hair, but it's blonde in the anime and most depictions of him.

8 Significance Of A Rose

Each member of the Host Club has their own rose color assigned to them, and each tends to signify something personal about their character- and this is no exception for Tamaki, whose rose color is pure white.

In Japanese culture, this signifies innocence, which is quite fitting of the sheltered King and his general naivetè throughout the series. The Western meaning is a bit ironic, being symbolic of happiness in love, as he's oblivious of his own romantic feelings for Haruhi throughout the entire anime and most of the manga, as well.

7 Outer Performances VS Inner Feelings

For a while, Haruhi believed that there wasn't much more to Tamaki besides being over-dramatic, flamboyant, and egotistical to the point of utter irritation. However, it doesn't take too long for her to realize that on the inside, there's much more to him than that, and he's one of the most empathetic and dedicated characters in the entire series. Though he may act foolishly at times, he does take his studies, friends and club activities incredibly seriously.

He never gives up on something once his mind is made up for the sake of helping others, the complete opposite of what the series' intro has the audience believe his character is, which is a wonderfully refreshing side of him.

6 Natural Gift To Inspire Others

Though it's easy to write Tamaki off as appearing self-absorbed and narcissistic, this simply isn't the case. In terms of helping other people open up and feel comfortable with their true selves, Tamaki was the trigger that helped every single host, including Haruhi, change for the better.

He helped the twins come out of their shell and learn that there's value in getting to know other people, he taught Honey that living a life that personally satisfies but may disappoint someone else is better than the opposite, and he teaches our favorite heroine Haruhi that there's more to life than studying and working.

5 Meaning Of A Name

Characters in fiction are rarely named without meaning, and that is definitely the case when it comes to everyone's favorite King's name, as well. Tamaki's name can mean 'circle' or 'link', and while that may not seem relevant to his character at first, after a bit of digging, it's clear that no name could suit him better. Tamaki literally serves as the link that brings the rest of the Host Club together and connects them to their dreams, instead of allowing them to keep running from them, even if he's oblivious to his own.

His nickname, Tono, also means 'lord', which is a title befitting of his status within the club.

4 Why He Calls Haruhi His 'Daughter'

Throughout the series, Tamaki refers to Haruhi as his 'daughter', which can come off as creepy- and it's easy to just play this off as a gag that simply aged poorly, but there's actually more to it than that. Tamaki's insistence on viewing and referring to Haruhi as his daughter is actually part of a condition known as 'sublimation', in which feelings that an individual views as unacceptable are shoved down, and they're forced to act in a certain way to prevent themselves from confronting how they really feel, because it's too much for them to handle at the time.

With this little tidbit in mind, the scenes where he refers to her in this way feel completely different, and almost sad.

3 His Favorite Foods

Tamaki can be seen throughout the series enjoying commoner's coffee, ramen, as well as various sweets, ever since Haruhi introduces such things to the club fairly early on. Instant coffee even gets labeled the trademark drink of the Host Club, with the Twins telling their manager she needed to drink it if she wanted to represent the club. What might come as a shock due to his rather luxurious upbringing is that 'any sort of commoner's food' is actually listed as Tamaki's favorite thing to eat!

If it's something from Haruhi's side of the world, he absolutely loves it, and we think that's incredibly sweet.

2 He Believes His Facade

Though most of how the Hosts act while performing their club duties can be considered a facade, this isn't completely true when it comes to the King. According to an informational page that was in the manga, though he appears quite glib with the girls, he really means the things he says to them and isn't simply flattering them for flattery's sake.

He really does love making women happy, and he also truly does believe that all women are pretty, loving nothing more than to charm them all giddy.

1 His Childhood

Tamaki can sometimes be described as being incredibly childish, with a fondness for childlike games that some believe he should have grown out of a long time ago. However, for him, his time with the Host Club was the first chance he really got to act like a kid and have fun without worry. His mother was incredibly ill as he grew up, and being the empathetic person he is, Tamaki refused to have fun without her and would instead play piano by her side to help keep her spirits up.

It's one of the reasons why he's so adept at the piano now, and also why his music has the ability to move pretty much anyone who hears it: for as long as he's played, he's poured all of his emotions and a genuine desire for others to be happy into his music.
