Ouran High School Host Club is a shojo romance created by Bisco Hatori that was first released in 2002, and since then, it's become one of the most popular shojo series to date. Ouran High School Host Club follows the story of Haruhi Fujioka, a brilliant honors student who receives a scholarship to the exclusive Ouran Academy.

Unfortunately for Haruhi, she breaks an expensive vase and has to repay her debt to the Host Club, who assume that she's a boy. Both the anime and manga are brilliant and funny, but there are many differences between the manga and its anime adaptation worth noting.

10 Realistic Seasons And School Years Don't Apply In The Manga

Ouran High School Host Club Cherry Blossom Season

Everyone knows that there are four seasons — summer, fall, winter, and spring — in one year. In the anime version of Ouran High School Host Club, the story covers one school year from April to March. As the anime never made it past season one, it's unclear when the students would actually graduate.

In the manga, Haruhi and the other characters experience the changing seasons many times within their first year, which isn't very realistic. In addition to this, the characters don't graduate until volume 15, which is a very long time to be in high school.

9 Haruhi's Mother Goes By Different Nicknames In The Anime Versus The Manga

Kotoko Fujioka in Haruhi's Dream

Haruhi's mother, Kotoko Fujioka, died from an unknown illness when Haruhi was only five years old. She was an amazing attorney who accepted her family for who they are. She knew that Haruhi's father, Ryouji "Ranka" Fujioka, was a cross-dresser and accepted this about him.

Even though it's been ten years since her passing, Haruhi thinks of her mother quite fondly. What's different between the manga and anime version of this series is that in the anime, Haruhi calls her mother "mom," while in the manga, she calls her "mother" or "mother in heaven."

8 Honey's Stuffed Rabbit Has A Completely Different Name

Mitsukuni "Honey" Haninozuka is a third-year high school student and the eldest of all of the hosts. In spite of his short stature and boyish appearance, Honey is well-versed in martial arts and makes a formidable opponent. He also has an enormous sweet tooth and likes cutesy things, much to his family's dismay.

One of the items that Honey likes to carry around is his stuffed bunny, which is his most prized possession as it was given to him by his grandmother. In the anime, this bunny is known as "Usa-chan," while in the manga, he is known as "Bun-Bun."

7 The Events Of The Final Anime Episode Didn't Occur In The Manga

Haruhi and Tamaki in the final episode

The Ouran Academy School Fair is an event that occurs in the very last episode of the anime. In this episode, Tamaki Suoh is engaged to Éclair Tonnerre, at the advisement of his grandmother, and the Host Club is almost at the point of disbandment. However, the members of the Host Club do everything in their power to convince Tamaki that their friendship is valuable and so is the Host Club.

By the end of the night, Tamaki realizes the error of his ways and makes many bold decisions that could have ended badly for him. What makes this episode interesting is that this event doesn't occur in the manga at all.

6 The Twins Had A Different Zodiac Sign

Kaoru and Hikaru Hitachiin are twins in the Host Club and are in the same year as Haruhi. Within the Host Club, these two portray a taboo brotherly love that many of the Host Club's patrons love. The two are always teasing each other or others, playing practical jokes, and generally just being mischievous.

In the anime, the twins' zodiac sign is Gemini. However, in the manga, the twins were originally Virgos. Their zodiac sign was changed to Gemini later on in the series.

5 Haruhi's Gender Reveal Is Different In The Manga

One of the key moments in the series was Haruhi's gender reveal. There was a great deal of buildup, excitement, and nervousness about when the members of the Host Club would realize that she was a girl. Slowly but surely, each member of the club realized in their own time. Tamaki, however, took the longest in both the anime and manga.

In the anime, Tamaki discovers that Haruhi is a girl when he accidentally walks in on her changing and notices Haruhi in a camisole. In the manga, Haruhi drops her identification card, which is picked up by Tamaki. On the card, he reads the symbol for female and sees her middle school photo where she had long hair.

4 There's More To The Pond Scene Than The Anime Portrayed

One of the many important moments where Haruhi sees Tamaki as something more than a privileged and over-the-top show-off is when he went out of his way to help her search for her wallet after it mysteriously ended up in a pond.

In the anime, he simply rolls up his sleeves and pants and helps her look. In the manga, however, he completely takes off his blazer, shirt, and tie before helping her look. In addition, Ayanokoji, who threw the wallet in the pond in the first place, also put razor blades in between the pages of Haruhi's books.

3 Another Host Member Saves Haruhi On Physical Examination Day

Every year at the Ouran Academy, students are subjected to a physical examination day. Normally, this wouldn't be a problem for the Host Club, but they don't want Haruhi's gender to be revealed to the student body, or else she won't be able to fulfill her club duties and repay her debts.

In the anime, Doctor Yabu is an odd man who accosts Haruhi, but fortunately Tamaki is there to save the day. However, in the manga, it's not Tamaki that saves Haruhi, it's actually Honey.

2 Renge Isn't A Recurring Character In The Manga

Renge Hoshokuji

Renge Houshakuji is an exchange student at Ouran Academy and is in the same class as Haruhi and the twins. The whole reason for her being at the school is because of Kyoya Ootori, who resembles a beloved character from one of her favorite dating sims.

Renge appears quite often throughout the anime series, even though she only makes a few appearances in the manga. In addition, in the manga, it's Tamaki, not Renge, who suggests that Shiro becomes the "naughty" type and coaches him.

1 Tamaki Doesn't Follow Haruhi To The Supermarket In The Manga

Ranka, Tamaki, and Haruhi In Grocery Store Ouran High School Host Club

One of the many enjoyable moments in the anime is where Tamaki and Haruhi's father, Ranka, share in their worry about Haruhi going to the store alone. Ranka reminisces about how Haruhi would do everything by herself and never want or need his help. Even so, he would follow her to the store to make sure she was okay, and when caught, he would act silly and make Haruhi laugh.

In the anime, Tamaki follows Haruhi to the store and acts silly when she discovers him, much like her father would do. But in the manga, after Haruhi finds Tamaki crying in the streets they go shopping together — and are followed by the rest of the Host Club and Ranka.
