Our Flag Means Death's Taika Waititi claims he knows who Thor: Love and Thunder star Chris Hemsworth should play in the HBO Max comedy series.
Waititi and Hemsworth spoke to Collider about the potential of the latter appearing in pirate comedy series. The Love and Thunder director joked that the Thor actor would play "Blackbeard's cousin Blondebeard" and that Hemsworth should "check [his] spam mail" inbox for the offer. "Yeah. Obviously, all these are really cool things Taika is doing on the side," Hemsworth said in jest. "And I'm like, 'Oh, it's weird. I didn't get a single text, a phone call about it.'"
The Love and Thunder stars went on to state that they would "do whatever [the other] asked [them] to do," including possibly appearing in Our Flag Means Death. "Any chance to come and play together and do things, it's like -- I was watching those Thor and Darryl short films. You know?" Waititi said in reference to the Team Thor short films he directed for Marvel Studios, which are now available on Disney+. "And that was really just like to test out this new version of Thor just before Ragnarok. We did these tiny little, like Thor flatting in Australia with this character Darryl. And those were great, man, they were so good."
Our Flag Means Death Season 2
In June, Our Flag Means Death was renewed for a second season by HBO Max. "We felt the show was special while we were making it," Jenkins said about the renewal at the time. "But fans' open-armed embrace of the inhabitants of the Revenge makes heading into a second season all the more sweet. Thanks to our team at HBO Max, our invested executive producers, and our wildly enthusiastic audience for making another voyage to this world possible."
Created by David Jenkins, Our Flag Means Death is a historical comedy that stars Rhys Darby as Stede Bonnet, an aristocrat who abandons his family to turn to a life of piracy. Along with executive producing, Waititi also stars in the series as the infamous pirate captain Blackbeard, who develops a mutual romantic attraction toward Bonnet. The show has developed a passionate fanbase in large part due to its explicit LGBTQ+ representation.
Along with Our Flag Means Death, Waititi has several projects currently in the pipeline that he is involved with. Thor: Love and Thunder, which stars Hemsworth in what could be the actor's final appearance as the titular character, is directed by Waititi and will mark the filmmaker's return to the franchise following 2017's Thor: Ragnarok.
The first season of Our Flag Means Death is available to stream on HBO Max. Thor: Love and Thunder hits theaters on July 8.
