The first details about John Ridley’s upcoming DC Black Label comic, The Other History of the DC Universe, have been released online by DC Comics.

Ridley, who previously wrote The American Way for Vertigo and the Academy Award-winning 12 Years a Slave, will pen The Other History of the DC Universe as a part of the DC Black Label imprint. The imprint was established earlier this year as a place where creators had creative freedom to tell self-contained, mature stories. Although it garnered controversy with the first title under the banner (Batman: Damned), the next Black Label book is still scheduled to be released early next year.

Largely written in prose and accompanied by artwork from a rotating roster of artists, The Other History of the DC Universe will explore some of the biggest moments in DC continuity, from the perspective of different disenfranchised groups.

The first issue of the series will focus on Black Lightning. Illustrator Alex Dos Diaz will provide the cover art and interior illustrations. The solicitation also reveals that the series will run for five issues, and that each issue will focus on different characters. These include Renee Montoya, Katana, Bumblebee and Herald.

The Other History of the DC Universe is scheduled to be released Jan. 30, 2019. Check out the cover art below.
