The anime database website My Anime List has given the debut installment of Oshi no Ko a rating of 9.32. This score has put the music/fantasy-centric title high above its fellow spring releases, including the third season of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, which currently sits at 8.73, and the Studio Mappa title Hell’s Paradise, which boasts a score of 8.44.

Oshi no Ko Explores the Dark Side of Entertainment

Oshi no Ko is a fantasy series that explores the dark side of the Japanese music industry, mixing bright colors and upbeat musical sequences with dark and, at times, violent themes. The manga is written by Aka Akasaka, the creator of the popular romance series Kaguya-Sama: Love is War, with the art handled by Mengo Yokoyari, known for the series Haruwaka. Studio Doga Kobo (Plastic Memories, Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-Kun, New Game!) announced the anime adaptation in June 2022. The company released the project’s first episode, “Mother and Children,” on April 12, 2023. This debut chapter came with a feature-length runtime, clocking in at one hour and 22 minutes long.

The series follows Gorou Amemiya, a countryside gynecologist who is obsessed with the young Idol Ai Hoshino. His dreams of meeting her soon come true when she visits his hospital to manage her secret pregnancy. However, things soon turn bizarre as Gorou finds himself reincarnated as Hoshino’s child after being killed by a mysterious stranger. He now lives his new life as Aquamarine Hoshino alongside his twin sister Ruby Hoshino, attempting to help his mother survive in the dark, twisted music industry.

The first episode of Oshi no Ko is available to watch on HIDIVE. Its second episode will arrive on the platform on April 19, 2023.
