The 93rd Academy Awards will not be held virtually. Instead, it is expected to take place in-person at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on April 25, 2021.

"The Oscars in-person telecast will happen," a representative from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and ABC, the network airing the event, told Variety.

The Academy is currently focused on how to fill the 3,400-seat Dolby Theatre. It is unclear what California's regulations will be at the time or if the event will receive some sort of waiver. Even if the theater is allowed to fill the seats, it is highly likely that many actors, directors and producers will skip the event, especially those in their later years. However, according to an awards publicist familiar with the situation, "the Academy has done a walkthrough of the Dolby recently to see all the multiple options."

While the Oscars are usually held in late February, the Academy opted to move this year's ceremony to April to allow for more time for movie theaters to open so more films can compete in the event. The Academy also extended the timeframe for awards eligibility by two months, pushing it back to Feb. 28, 2021. The nominations will be announced on March 15, 2021.

Aside from the date changes, the Academy also loosened its regulations on streaming films. While films usually have to run for at least seven days in Los Angeles, movies are now allowed to skip theaters altogether and debut digitally. However, the feature must have originally been scheduled for a theatrical release and needs to be available on the Academy Screening Room website within 60 days of its premiere. Furthermore, movies can play in theaters in New York City, the Bay Area, Chicago, Miami or Atlanta and still be considered eligible.

The 78th Golden Globe Awards, which will be held on Feb. 28 before the Oscars, will air live from The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills and will be hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. Meanwhile, the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards were held this past September as hybrid event. Some in-person elements took place with host Jimmy Kimmel, while most of the nominees watched virtually and received their awards from their homes.

The 93rd Academy Awards will air live on ABC on April 25, 2021.
