Moon Knight star Oscar Isaac has opened up about his initial concerns that his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut would tank his entire career.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Isaac discussed what he felt was the biggest risk of his career. "Moon Knight felt that way," he said. "Like, 'Man, I'm going to go down hard with this thing.' Just the level of embarrassment that it would be, once you throw on a cape, you know what I mean? And you're out in front of it. It's like, 'Holy shit, I'm really doing this thing.'"

Moon Knight, which premiered on Disney+ on March 30, follows the adventures of the series' titular antihero. Based on the comic book character of the same name, Moon Knight introduced audiences to a slew of new concepts and characters apart from its frequently dissociative star. Alongside Isaac's Marc Spector/Steven Grant/Jake Lockley, the series starred Ethan Hawke as the malevolent Arthur Harrow, as well as May Calamawy as Layla El-Faouly, aka Scarlet Scarab.

When soon to be returning Batman star Michael Keaton -- who was also present for the interview -- brought up the commitment a comic book role takes, Isaac expounded on that idea. "The trick with this one was, like, 'Can I do both?" Isaac said. "Can you smuggle in the thing that matters to me, the reason why I like doing it, so every morning when that alarm goes off, I could be excited to get to work and not just be like, 'I've got to get through this to get that check or whatever.' And it seemed like this was an opportunity, maybe because of the TV landscape, where there seems to be a lot more risk-taking, to do this bizarre thing that happened to be in the case of a superhero genre film."

Isaac also commented on the inherent risks many industry insiders associate with signing on to a Marvel Studios project, namely the near instant response time the studio typically expects. Isaac, however, was hesitant to take up the role. "Yeah, it was so much about, like, 'Is this the stupidest thing? Is this a smart thing?' It was such mental torment just to make the decision," he said.

Despite any initial doubt, there are already signs pointing towards a return of the Fist of Khonshu sometime in the future. Consulting producer Sarah Goher remarked on the future of Moon Knight in the MCU, saying, "This is a story we've only scratched the surface of. No ending could possibly capture a story like this. The ending is really a 'to be continued.'"

Moon Knight is currently streaming on Disney+.
