Starz’s TV adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s sci-fi/fantasy story “American Gods” has released a first look image of Orlando Jones as Mr. Nancy (aka the African trickster god Anansi), and the results are just as cool as we were hoping.
Jones was eager to dive into the character as a long-time fan of the book. “I’m so excited to play Mr. Nancy — one of my favorite characters ever — this is really like a pinch-yourself moment the entire way. I’m just giddy about it,” Jones told Vanity Fair in an interview.
Anansi is also a character that Jones knows well outside of the realm of fantasy and sci fi. “I was born in Mobile, Alabama — the real home of the Mardi Gras,” he said. “Anansi is one of those characters that survived the Middle Passage, began in western Africa, and made his way here and really proliferated throughout the southern United States. The Spider God, the Trickster God was part of stories that my great-grandfather would tell me when I used to sneak him cigarettes.”
A spin-off series for the character is already a possibility before the show has even aired. Jones said show creators Bryan Fuller and Michael Green had the 2005 spin-off book “Anansi Boys” in mind when they were developing the character, “and that they wanted to spin it off and pursue that character.”
“If there is a spin-off of any kind, I’d love to do it,” he said. “I’ve been fortunate that this is one of the most exciting and incredible experiences I’ve been able to do as an actor, and I’ll continue for as long as I possibly can.”
“American Gods” premieres April 30.
