Orlando Bloom will play Rycroft Philostrate, a police inspector, in Amazon's upcoming fantasy-noir series Carnival Row. According to Vulture, Rycroft is attempting "to get to the bottom of a faerish refugee's death."

Bloom is well-known for his roles as Legolas in The Lord of the Rings, Will Turner in The Pirates of the Caribbean and Balian de Ibelin in Kingdom of Heaven. Although the actor has appeared on TV before, Carnival Row will mark the first time he's played the lead in a series.

The official synopsis for Carnival Row reads:

Carnival Row is a fantasy-noir set in a neo-Victorian city. Mythical creatures fleeing their war-torn homeland have gathered in the city, and tensions are simmering between citizens and the growing immigrant population. The series follows the investigation of a string of unsolved murders that are eating away at whatever uneasy peace still exists.

Rene Echevarria (Star Trek: The Next Generation) will serve as showrunner, while Travis Beacham (Pacific Rim) and Paul McGuigan (Victor Frankenstein) will produce. The show was given an eight-episode order in May, bypassing the pilot process.

Hellboy director Guillermo del Toro was originally attached to the series, but his schedule forced him to drop out earlier this year.
