The original Captain Marvel shines brightly on the newly revealed variant cover for November's Captain Marvel #34, illustrated by Stanley "Artgerm" Lau.

The issue continues the "The Last of the Marvels" story arc, by writer Kelly Thompson, which kicks off in September's Captain Marvel #32. A mysterious villain targeting the Captain Marvel legacy emerges, and Carol Danvers will have to work with those who have assumed the Captain Marvel name before her, like Genis-Vell, as well as Kamala Khan, the current Ms. Marvel. Mar-Vell, the intergalactic Kree military officer who was the first to use the name, may make an appearance too -- though it is currently unknown if the legendary hero will actually be resurrected in the flesh.

Mar-Vell died of cancer in 1982's The Death of Captain Marvel, a graphic novel by Jim Starlin. The Kree warrior was honored by all of his superhero comrades in his final moments, and even received recognition from Thanos, his supreme foe, who guided him to the afterlife as a sign of respect.

Mar-Vell went on to attain a near-mythological status in the Marvel Universe, particularly since aside from the occasional flashback and a few brief resurrections -- such as his inclusion in the Chaos War: Dead Avengers series of 2010 -- he has remained dead, unlike many comic book characters whose deaths turn out to be temporary or faked.

Captain Marvel #34, written by Thompson with art by Sergio Davila, a main cover by Iban Coello and variants by Artgerm, releases on Nov. 17.
