Writing and producing partners Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci have been virtually inseparable for most of the past decade, collaborating on films ranging from The Island and Transformers to Star Trek and The Amazing Spider-Man 2. And while they’ll continue to work together on television projects, Variety reports they’ll pursue separate interests on the big screen.
For Orci, the most pressing project may be Star Trek 3, which he’s writing with Patrick McKay and John D. Payne. According to the website, he’s also pushing to make his directorial debut on the Paramount Pictures sequel, replacing J.J. Abrams.
Kurtzman and Orci were named in December as part of Sony’s Spider-Man franchise “brain trust” and tapped to co-write The Amazing Spider-Man 3 as well as the Venom spinoff, which Kurtzman will direct. He’s also said to be working on a deal with Universal Pictures to oversee the reboot of the studio’s monster franchise.
The two have worked together since the late 1990s, when they got their start on Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. Their production banner K/O Paper Products, which has a deal with CBS TV Studios, is expected to remain intact for the time being.
