Ever since Supernatural premiered back on September 13, 2005 and introduced the world to Sam and Dean Winchester, the world of television was changed forever. Telling the story of two brothers who go out and fight monsters, all the while dealing with their own emotional problems, it was, and continues to be, a program that has a little something for everyone. Already well into its 13th season, and with no signs of slowing down, the number of heroes and villains that have shown up and added to Supernatural are plentiful and impressive. Despite having to face down the likes of Lucifer, vampires, and other ridiculously powerful creatures, the Winchesters have always managed to find a way to win. Still, it begs the question, who are the most overpowered characters on Supernatural?

With 13 seasons to look at, you can bet your angel blade that there’s a ton of characters to examine. Some entities, like God, have the ability to do anything, while others, like Crowley, are precise like a surgeon’s razor. Yet with heroes and villains that boast the ability to destroy planets and even time travel and warp reality, we’re going to look at 15 of the most OP characters on Supernatural.

15 GOD

It’s hard to get bigger than God. The one who started everything, God is, well…God! As he created the freaking universe, there’s little God cannot do. The only entity capable of posing a threat to his person is his sister, Amara, otherwise known as the Darkness. Together, they serve as the balance in the universe; they are the light and the dark. If either one is destroyed, existence would cease to be.

God created angels, humanity, the world, and even human souls. Granted, his son Lucifer brought demons into existence, but if he really wanted to, God could wipe them out with a thought. Taking on the guise of writer Chuck Shurley so he could observe the Winchesters, God would occasionally, and inconspicuously, lend a hand. It wasn’t until season 12 that God made his full appearance.

14 LUCIFER

There are entire seasons dedicated to Lucifer and the threat he poses to all life on Earth. While the likes of God and the Darkness are capable of handedly defeating him, few other beings can come close to even hurting Lucifer. The second of four archangels created by God, he was at one time the Lord’s favorite son.

After he was banished, thanks to becoming overly bloodthirsty after God gave him the Mark of Cain, Lucifer became the ruler of Hell and created demons. One of the first celestial beings, he is far superior to every other demon and nearly every angel. The full list of Lucifer’s abilities is long and intimidating, but the end result is that unless you’re one of a couple divine entities, you’re not going to give the Devil a scratch. With just a snap of his fingers, Lucifer can blow up most anyone he encounters.

13 MARK OF CAIN DEAN

The Mark of Cain was a seal created to lock away the Darkness. God originally gave the Mark to Lucifer, but the Devil gave it to Cain and made it the source of the First Blade’s power, the weapon capable of killing almost anything.

Often called “the first curse” the Mark of Cain makes whoever wields it stupidly powerful. Before Dean killed him, Cain passed the Mark onto Dean; it branded itself on the hunter’s arm. Aside from being compelled to kill, the Mark gave Dean incredible abilities, including immortality, super strength, and made him impervious to any demonic attack, even from a Knights of Hell. Beings like Abbadon could only fall before Dean’s power. With the First Blade in his possession, there were few Dean couldn’t kill. The combination of the Mark and the First Blade was so startling, that even Death was concerned about Dean’s might.

12 THE DARKNESS

After Dean Winchester tampered with the Mark of Cain, the Darkness was unleashed. Primordial dark energy, she was actually the sister of God. The Darkness took on the form of a human and was named Amara. From the get-go, even as a child, the Darkness demonstrated overwhelming power. All of Heaven united and tried to smite her with their strongest attack, but it barely ruffled her hair. From there, her feats became more astounding.

At one point, all of Supernatural’s heavy hitters united to take her out. As a result, a series of attacks by the most powerful witches, an entire demon army, an angel army, Lucifer, and finally God himself, hits Amara. Even after all that, along with getting stabbed by the Spear of Destiny, Amara is only “weakened”, but still banished Lucifer from Castiel and mortally wounds God.

11 THE BRITISH MEN OF LETTERS

Several seasons ago, the Winchesters discovered there was a secret magical bunker left over from the Men of Letters, a scholarly group dedicated to battling the supernatural. Shortly thereafter, they found out there was a British Men of Letters who were deadlier than nearly any monster(s) they’d faced.

Like the Winchesters and every other hunter, the British Men of Letters are human. They have no special powers, but similar to Sam and Dean, they apply their genius to devise elaborate ways with which to combat supernatural threats. More militarized, they spy on their enemies and determine their strength before assembling teams to kill them. When Ms. Watt, one of the British Men of Letters, first met our heroes, she single-handedly beats Dean, before nearly killing Castiel with some magical brass knuckles. The reach of this group was far and wide; they’d even eliminated all supernatural creatures from England.

10 DEATH

Quite frankly, there really shouldn’t be anyone more powerful than Death himself. Death is, after all, the end of all things. Having existed from the beginning of time, he popped up in creation at around same time God appeared. However, were you to ask him, Death does not remember who came first.

Since he’s Death, there’s little he cannot do. One of the most powerful beings in the universe, Death explained that the only entity to exceed his power was the Darkness. Even so, Death is not to be messed with. He once claimed that in the future he will reap God, to which Dean was stunned. Nigh-omnipotent, Death can resurrect whomever he wants and kill anything with a touch. The only thing that can kill Death, which is a funny idea in and of itself, is his own scythe. And yes, the Winchesters killed Death with his trusty weapon.

9 GOD CASTIEL

In the season six finale and onwards into the beginning of season seven, everyone’s favorite angel Castiel assumed the role of God. In the absence of the Almighty, Castiel had gotten tired of waiting for God’s return and decided, that in the absence of the Lord, he will become the new God. To that end, Castiel absorbs the Leviathans and their much-vaunted powers. He also takes in millions of souls and becomes so mighty it’s theorized he was actually on par with God.

In his new form, Castiel could do nearly anything he envisioned, including defeating Death. The only problem for the angel of heaven was that his flesh body couldn’t handle the overload of power and began literally falling apart. Still, Castiel would have ruled the universe if not for that tiny hiccup.

8 GABRIEL

The youngest of the archangels created by God, Gabriel has a penchant for chaos. Gabriel might not be the strongest of his siblings, but he’s one of the smartest. In his early days, Gabriel would travel the world and kill anyone he thought was a jerk. Eventually, Sam and Dean arrived at his doorstep. Rather than outright kill them, Gabriel decided to have fun with the two hunters and show off his tremendous powers.

Highly skilled with reality warping, Gabriel can make anyone or anything appear out of thin air. He used this power to put the Winchesters through Groundhog Day scenarios, time loops as it were, but also put them in their favorite TV shows. One of the few angels to show off his chronokinesis, Gabriel easily travels through time and can reverse time (and reverse a person’s death) with just a snap of his fingers.

7 METATRON

Arguably the most conniving enemy the Winchesters have faced, and that’s saying a lot, Metatron proved that brainpower can be far more reliable than brute force. Though his position in the cosmic hierarchy was as the Scribe of God, Metatron came to the conclusion that he might just do a better job at ruling than God. Through ingenious engineering and diabolical manipulations, he tricked Castiel into banishing all the angels in Heaven. Once that was done, Metatron used the Angel Tablet to attain god-like power. With the angels under his rule, he then sought to subjugate mankind.

After temporarily replacing God, Metatron was practically unstoppable. All his angelic abilities were boosted immeasurably; he even possessed some abilities other angels did not, thanks to his being God’s scribe. Only by Castiel tricking Metatron into revealing his selfish plans to every angel, is he finally ganged up on and defeated.

6 THE ANTI-CHRIST

Supernatural’s current season, more specifically season 13, is focusing heavily on Lucifer’s son, Jack, who is a Nephilim. This means he’s the child of a fallen angel and a human. The idea is rather gnarly and Sam and Dean are up to their ears in stress, having taken on the role of his surrogate parents to try and teach the Devil’s son right from wrong. However, this wasn’t the first time Sam and Dean have interacted with an offspring of Lucifer. Back in Season Five, the character Jesse was introduced, and he was supposedly the Anti-Christ.

Anyway, despite just being a child, Jesse Turner demonstrated more power than nearly any other Supernatural character, including Jack. He could do pretty much anything, just by thinking about it. This included turning Castiel into a toy, warping reality, teleporting, and exorcising demons. Maybe it’s for the best that he hasn’t returned.

5 JACK

Born to a human woman and Lucifer, Jack is a Nephilim. The only one of his kind, Jack is one of the most powerful beings in Creation. To put Jack’s power into perspective, Doctor Hess, one of the British Men of Letters, stated he had the potential to destroy the entire universe. Even angels quake in his presence, stating that can do almost anything.

Jack easily destroyed the Prince of Hell Dagon and awoke Castiel, bringing him back from The Empty, a place outside of time and space that even God was said to have no power over. Jack is strong enough to warp reality, he can teleport, possesses telekinesis and telepathy, and is practically invulnerable to most conventional means of attack. His powers have yet to fully develop, but thankfully he seems to want to be a good guy.

4 MICHAEL

In Supernatural, there’s a totem pole in relation to power-sets and who’s stronger than whom. The Archangels, as created by God, are amongst the mightiest beings in the universe. Sure, they’re not as powerful as God, the Darkness, or even Jack and the Anti-Christ, but you’d hardly be able to tell just by looking. The strongest archangel is Michael, and he’s no laughing matter. If his younger brothers can take the universal building blocks apart and refashion them to their own design, Michael can do that and so much more.

One of God’s first creations, and the eldest of the Archangels, Michael is the strongest angel under the Almighty’s command. One of the few beings stronger than Lucifer, even when Castiel was empowered by 40 million souls and temporarily became God, he was afraid at the idea of having to battle Michael.

3 CROWLEY

One of the central characters in Supernatural, Crowley has fought against and with the Winchesters countless times. Ultimately, he’s allied to himself and his own agendas and this makes him extremely dangerous. Crowley might not be the biggest or the baddest monster out there, but he’s clever, and is more often than not, several steps ahead of everyone else. Incredibly efficient and likening himself to a businessman, underestimate Crowley at your own peril.

Graduating from a lowly demon to King of the Crossroads and then the King of Hell, Crowley is smart enough to get the drop on the likes of Lucifer on more than one occasion. Because of his high position, Crowley is among the most powerful demons to appear in Supernatural. With a slew of abilities at his disposal, Crowley truly is one of a kind.

2 THE LEVIATHANS

Also known as the Old Ones, the Leviathans were God’s first beasts. Predating angels, humans, and even souls, the Leviathans proved more destructive than God originally intended and were locked them away in Purgatory. When Castiel inadvertently opened Purgatory, he absorbed a ton of souls, but the Leviathans as well. Eventually they broke free from Castiel’s body. Their plan was to rule the word, use the human race as food, and kill every other supernatural creature.

The Leviathans, and especially their leader Dick Roman, are so powerful, they cannot be killed by an earthly methods, and every supernatural weapon like angel blades, Heaven’s weapons, and holy fire can’t hurt them. Even when Dick was “killed”, he didn’t die, but was merely sent back to Purgatory. The only weapon in existence that can hurt/kill a Leviathan is the Bone of A Righteous Mortal Washed in The Three Bloods of The Fallen.

1 SAM AND DEAN WINCHESTER

Brothers Sam and Dean Winchester are two guys who are very skilled at killing monsters. Armed with only their wits, some impressive know-how, and a few weapons and spells, they’ve taken on everything the universe has thrown at them. The Winchesters have faced off against Lucifer, vampires, werewolves, demons, the Leviathans, rogue angels, and even God’s evil sister, yet at the end of the day, guess who’s still standing? Sam and Dean Winchester, that’s who! In face of primordial powers, the brothers hardly flinch.

They embody the expression “when there’s a will there’s a way”. No matter how powerful their opponent, they don’t give up. Their perseverance and determination are their super power. Beings like the Devil underestimate them, thinking they’re “only human”, but these humans have gone to hell and back (literally) and are still kicking celestial butt.
