One-Punch Man has done an excellent job of delivering an action-packed story led by a rather mundane protagonist. There have only been a few opponents that Saitama has ever taken seriously and Speed-O-Sound Sonic certainly isn't one of them. During their first encounter, Saitama unintentionally made an absolute fool of Sonic.

Despite Sonic being one of the best martial artists in the series, he was no match for Saitama. Not only did Saitama break his weapons, but he also ended up accidentally lightly striking Sonic's most sensitive reigion- which ended the fight rather abruptly. While Saitama and Sonic are two incredibly different people, different fighters, and on different ends of the hero spectrum, they may have more in common than they realize.

10 Similarity - They Both Kill Their Opponents

Saitama Punching In One Punch Man Anime

One thing these two have in common is that they are not afraid to kill their opponents. Sonic views it as a point of professional pride to walk away from a job where there are no survivors. Sonic often used his enormous speed advantage to catch his targets off guard and end them quickly with a simple decapitation.

Saitama has also killed many opponents in his three years of being a hero, but he typically kills bad guys that want to hurt people and destroy cities. As the titular character to the show, Saitama often permanently defeats his foes in one punch. Once in a while, it requires more effort, but not often.

9 Difference - Sonic Kills for Pleasure, But Saitama Kills on Accident (Usually)

Sonic is kind of on the villain spectrum, while he may believe what he is doing is right, he doesn't have a strong moral compass. Aside from the professionalism, Sonic seems to enjoy ending lives. He even teases the Paradisers about killing them all and gives them a chance to get away before he starts his cruel slaughter.

Saitama on the other hand typically kills his opponents accidentally, most of the time. Saitama is the poster child for not knowing his own strength. Often times Saitama must kill a monster to save a city, but even when he is holding back he can do a bit more damage than intended.

8 Similarity - They Don't Care What Anyone Else Thinks

Saitama One Punch Man

Neither Sonic nor Saitama much cares for what others think about them. Sonic is arrogant, pompous, and believes himself above others. He doesn't believe the common people are worthy of him so he could care less what they think. All they are to him are potential clients and potential targets.

Saitama on the other hand merely just does not care, at all. Saitama has received praise and condemnation and he takes it all the same, no real concern one way or the other. There have been moments where he has yelled at would-be fans that ridiculed him for doing things wrong. However, he typically yells that he doesn't care what anyone thinks and that he only does the hero thing for himself.

7 Difference - Sonic is a Blade for Hire While Saitama Truly Wants to Become a Hero

Speed-O-Sound Sonic with his Ninja Mask on

Sonic is essentially a mercenary in a world full of heroes and villains. He fights for whichever side is offering him the best deal. He is first seen as a hired sword to stop the Paradisers from reaching a multimillionaire's estate. By the end of season two Sonic has all but joined the Monster Association because he thinks they can make him strong enough to defeat Saitama.

Saitama decided to become a hero after defeating Crablante, back when Saitama still had hair. He trained so hard that all of his hair fell out and he became the strongest hero anywhere. While his moral motivations are still a bit ambiguous, the fans know that Saitama will always fall on the hero side of the fence.

6 Similarity - They Wear Skin-Tight Outfits with Similar Accessories

Saitama almost surprised by Boros

Sonic favors a much darker color scheme with black, purple, and steel. Saitama is a much brighter figure in his yellow jumpsuit with bright red boots, red gloves, and a white cape. While the color scheme and accessories are different, they both wear rather similar costumes.

Sonic and Saitama both wear skin-tight bodysuits and employ the use of neck accessories. Saitama has his trademark white cape whereas Sonic has his billowing purple scarf. Sonic uses metal plating around his shoulders, forearms, ribs, and legs. Saitama has his neat belt buckle, signature red boots, and gloves. While the overall vibe of the costumes is visually different, their base components are noticeably similar.

5 Difference - Sonic Uses Weapons, But Saitama Uses His Fists

Speed-O-Sound Sonic's sword breaking

Sonic is an avid weapon user and being trained in the art of the ninja, he is rather skilled with quite a few sharp weapons. His weapon of choice appears to be his katana-like sword. He has also used throwing stars against Saitama, to no avail.

Saitama strictly uses his hands to get the job done. The only time Saitama is shown using a weapon in the anime is before he is unbeatable and struggled to pull Crablante out of his shell using his tie. Typically, Saitama will use normal consecutive punches to make short work of his foes with the occasional serious punch.

4 Similarity - They Both Enjoy a Good Fight

One-Punch Man's Saitama looking up in awe.

There is no denying that both fighters enjoy a rousing bout with a worthy adversary. For Sonic that adversary is Satiama and he spends much of his on-screen time looking for ways to best Saitama. Sonic is still lightyears away from reaching Saitama's level, but he can do some serious damage to lesser foes.

For Saitama, he has yet to find a worthy foe in the anime. While his fight with Boros did go on for some time, he was barely putting in any effort. Saitama was enjoying himself until he was forced to get serious and keep Boros' attack from obliterating the city. Anytime Saitama puts in any real effort, he ends the fight too soon.

3 Difference - Sonic is a Showman While Saitama Just Gets to the Point

Speed O Sound Sonic Smirk

Everything about Sonic indicates that he is a diva of sorts. His costume is flashy, his gimmick is speed, and his name is superfluous to the point it has been questioned by other heroes. Given his background in acrobatics, he could make an excellent entertainer if he were ever to end his pursuit of Saitama.

Saitama is a straight shooter and cannot be bothered with superfluous monologues, he prefers people get to the point in twenty words or less. He also has no shame in cutting things short when he gets bored or is ready to do something else. Sometimes his nonchalant brutal honesty can seem a bit curt.

2 Similarity - They Strive to Be Better

Saitama clenching his fist in might

Both of these fighters are always trying to improve themselves to become better than they were before. Sonic wants to become stronger so he can defeat Saitama. Sonic has a long, arduous journey ahead, but Saitama himself has shown that his level of strength is attainable through a strict regimen.

Saitama has already reached the peak of human physical ability. Thanks to his recent heart-to-heart with King, he now has an internal journey to focus on. Rather than continue to strengthen his unmatched physical form, his new path is one of self-understanding and inner peace.

1 Difference - Sonic Chose the Path of the Monster While Saitama Chose the Path of the Hero

Sonic Almost Eats Monster Cells in OPM

Quite possibly the biggest difference between Sonic and Saitama is their allegiance. Sonic dances the line between hero and villain, but when he accepted the Monster Cell from his fellow ninjas turned monster, fans feared the worst. Lucky for Sonic his arrogance got the better of him and he chose to cook the Monster Cell prior to eating it. While it did give him an immense bowel reaction, it did not turn him into a monster.

Saitama on the other hand was playing hero for three years before realizing that there was a Hero Association with vast resources, including payroll. Shortly after joining, Saitama plowed through C-Class, nearly all the way through B-Class, and even fought side-by-side with almost every hero in S-Class. Surely Saitama will find himself permanently among the ranks of S-Class before long.
