It didn't take Justin Lin long to find his next project after departing Fast X at the end of April.

According to Deadline, the acclaimed director behind Better Luck Tomorrow, Fast Five and Star Trek Beyond is set to helm a live-action film adaptation of One-Punch Man for Sony Pictures. Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner, who previously worked together on Jumanji: The Next Level and Venom for Sony, will write the script for the feature-length adaptation of the popular manga series. Lin is expected to work on a rewrite of the script with Rosenberg and Pinkner.

One-Punch Man follows the story of Saitama, a superhero who can defeat any opponent with a single punch but seeks to find a worthy opponent after growing bored by the lack of challenges in his fight against evil. Originally published as a webcomic in 2009 by Japanese artist ONE, One-Punch Man was later published on Shueisha’s Tonari no Young Jump Next after going viral. Worldwide sales for One-Punch Man total over 30 million copies and the series has since been translated into multiple languages. A critically acclaimed TV anime series based on the manga premiered in 2015, with an English dub arriving the following year.

A live-action film adaptation of One-Punch Man was originally announced by Sony in April 2020 after the studio acquired the film rights from Shueisha. The project received no major developments until Lin boarded the project as director just under two months since he departed Fast X, the tenth installment in the long-running Fast Saga. Although Universal originally claimed Lin, who directed five of the nine Fast and Furious movies, left over creative differences, multiple industry insiders and sources close to the production of Fast X revealed that Lin left because he could no longer handle star Vin Diesel's behavior as a star and producer on the film. The Incredible Hulk's Louis Leterrier signed on to replace Lin as director in May.

Lin will produce One-Punch Man alongside Avi Arad and Ari Arad of Arad Productions, who are best known for their work on several Marvel films including the Spider-Man film series. Sony is confident that One-Punch Man could be the start of a new franchise for the studio and is hoping production can begin on the adaptation by the end of the year.

One-Punch Man does not have a release date at this time.
