WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for One-Punch Man Season 2, Episode 11, "The Varieties of Pride," available now on Hulu.

The previous episode of One-Punch Man ended with Season 2's main antagonist Garou wounded and outnumbered as he faced a group of A-class heroes led by a figure named Death Gatling. Completely exhausted and beaten after enduring back-to-back defeats by Watchdog Man and Saitama, it looked as though Garou might be put down for good as Season 2 nears its end but, as always, the self-proclaimed Human Monster found a way to overcome the odds and score another victory.

While recuperating from his losses, Garou reunited with the ostracized young Tareo, with the boy discovering Garou in his usual hiding place in a remote shed. Garou sees Tareo as a kindred spirit, and flashbacks reveal Garou's similar troubled upbringing. Garou ultimately uses Tareo's hero guide to learn about his opponents' strategies to anticipate their moves while noticing their own apparent hubris in numbers.

Garou points out that the ensemble didn't bring any S-class heroes to help them and, that the fight may have gone in their favor if they had even brought one. Resentment between the different rankings within the Hero Association had been revealed earlier in Season 2, with B-class hero Fubuki forming her own sub-organization frustrated by her much higher ranked older sister receiving all the acclaim in the family. This sense of pride proves to be the heroes' undoing as Garou systemically picks Death Gatling and his friends apart, goading them into making themselves vulnerable.

While the effort and fresh wounds leave Garou even weaker than before, the carnage shocks Tareo and sends him running away in tears. Before Garou can reflect on his own present legacy, he is confronted by a man of the future. Genos, freshly upgraded with new cybernetic implants, takes on Garou, following the commotion caused by the earlier fight. Despite putting up a good fight, Genos is clearly the superior opponent and prepares to incinerate Garou when the brawl is interrupted by a figure from the hero hunter's past.

Bang, Garou's old martial arts instructor and one of the most respected members of the Hero Association, finally tracks down his old protege with his brother Bomb after spending much of the season hunting for him. Quickly dispatching representatives from the Monster Association who have arrived to offer Garou another bid to join them in their ongoing war against humanity, Bang recalls his first meeting with Garou when the student was a young boy looking to get stronger.

Unbeknownst to the venerable martial arts master, the boy came to him with the secret goal of becoming powerful enough to avenge the monsters he admired as child who were constantly killed by heroes. As Bomb departs to pursue the retreating monsters, Genos agrees to turn over the fight to Bang to complete his unfinished business against Garou.

In rapid succession, Garou has had to face his present legacy as a hero hunter, the next generation of superheroes in Genos and his past mentor in Bang. Shortly before his fight with Genos, Garou had quietly admitted to himself that he was having trouble standing and his inability to land any decisive strikes against the cybernetic hero has shown that he is gradually becoming all the more worse for the wear.

While Garou had used the group of A-class heroes' hubris against them, his own pride may spell his own defeat as he confronts the man who taught him everything he knew. And with Season 2 of One-Punch Man quickly drawing to a close, Garou's final defeat may come soon enough.
