The captain of the Straw Hat Pirates, Monkey D. Luffy, is one of the many favorite characters from the anime One Piece. But Luffy is equally the most disliked character by fans and non-fans alike as well. Fans love the loyalty he has to his crew, the way he is willing to go out of his way to help others, the power he showcases when taking down the enemy, and more.

However, like many characters, Luffy is not without his faults. He doesn't seem to understand that food is not infinite, he lacks understanding of human emotions, and he's constantly continuing habits that put others in harm's way. Luffy, like many shonen protagonists, shows as many bad traits as he does good traits.

10 Luffy Always Wants More Meat

If it wasn't for Sanji, there's a high chance that most of the crew would starve because of Luffy's gluttony issues. No matter how much food he's given, Luffy is still seen stealing or trying to steal others' food.

His insatiable appetite has even forced Sanji to keep the fridge chained and locked up to keep Luffy at bay. This behavior does not change even when eating in the presence of others outside the crew and food usually makes for half of the rewards received whenever the crew takes down a baddie.

One of Luffy's more annoying traits, especially among his crew, is his inability to listen. There have been many moments when Nami or another crew member will tell him to do (or not do) something. Moments later, he does the complete opposite of what he was instructed, proving he was not listening whatsoever or that he couldn't care less.

This has led to the crew being put into some awkward and uncomfortable scenarios. Surprisingly, the Straw Hat crew has not resorted to keeping an endless supply of duct tape on board.

8 Luffy Has The Attention Span Of A Puppy

No matter how serious the mission or task at hand, Luffy will normally always find a way to get sidetracked. Whether it's by food or something that he finds cool, everything must be put on hold to tend to whatever he sees.

This trait of Luffy's can be funny at times but when used to prolong a part of the story, it can be frustrating to fans and even his own crew. Sometimes it's a trait that other members of the crew seem to display, too, but not as much as Luffy.

7 Luffy Gets Surprised By Others' Inevitable But Sudden Betrayals

One of Luffy's admirable traits is being able to make friends with almost anyone he comes across, even if it is someone who was a former enemy. At the same time, this trait can also be a hindrance because of the many times it has left Luffy open to trouble.

He is easily accepting of people without caution or thought to the possibility of betrayal. While there are betrayals that can be quite shocking, especially those that may involve the crew, other betrayals not so much.

6 Luffy Is A Fighting Prima Donna

There have been many fights that Luffy has been in that could have finished a lot sooner but ended up being dragged out for a variety of reasons or complications. Some of these include moments when the enemy uses something to hinder Luffy, such as sleep gas or a cage made of sea prism stone.

However, there are other moments where the only thing hindering him is himself because he did not give it his all from the get-go or is taking forever to warm up. While some of the dragged-out fights have led to interesting moments, some would have been better to finish sooner than later.

5 Luffy Forgets He Is Not King Of The Pirates Yet

Luffy is one of the strongest pirates around, which is noted often by himself, his crew, the World Government, and many others. Regardless, Luffy is not invincible despite what he may believe and despite the many victories he has achieved.

There have been many fights where has lost due to his overconfidence that he's unbeatable or that he could just punch his way through a situation. Despite the number of losses that he has endured, his overconfidence stays intact and will more than likely lead him to more losses in the future.

4 Luffy Encompasses The Meaning Of Reckless

If there was one word to describe Luffy as a whole, it would be "reckless," which is ordinarily what everyone calls him when he does something foolish. Sometimes he rushes into a fight or situation.

Other times, he forgets that he can't swim due to his devil fruit powers, or he plays around on the ship too much and causes an accident or messes up the hard work of a fellow crew member. No matter the carnage or left in his path from this trait, it never seems to affect Luffy enough to matter or stop him.

3 Luffy's Wall Of Stubbornness Is Nearly Impenetrable

When Luffy has made his mind up about something, he usually sticks to it firmly. This is useful when it comes to rescuing his friends or for taking down the bad guy. However, in certain occurrences where miscommunication is involved or there is not a full grasp of the situation, it can be fatal and near impossible to change Luffy's mind after coming to a false conclusion.

This has caused him to jump into a fight or situation too soon. It has also caused him to bring harm to the wrong people, even members of the crew, such as when he attacked Zoro on the island of Whiskey Peak without letting him fully explain himself. It's a trait that many would have trouble forgiving, but the crew chooses to overlook it.

2 Luffy's Emotionless Tendencies Are Contradictive

Luffy is known for doing everything to protect and help members of his crew when they need him. He has repeatedly shown how strong his loyalty to his friends is. Regardless, there is a trait that appears from time to time that feels contradictory to this big part of his personality: his lack of empathy.

There have been times when Luffy shows no regard for people's feelings, possessions, or the work they are doing. An example of this can be seen when Luffy appears to disregard Usopp's feelings when it comes to the Going Merry. This trait does not make much sense to Luffy's character and feels more like a story ploy to get the story to progress in a certain manner.

1 Luffy's Consequences Often Put The Crew In Danger

Many times when the Straw Hats were in danger or dragged into an unneeded situation, Luffy caused it by doing something he was not supposed to. He might open his big mouth and accidentally alert the enemies or reveal a secret. In short, he doesn't always think his actions through.

Some events, such as Luffy using his stretchy powers to fling the crew back onto the ship without considering their safety, are humorous and nothing serious. Other moments, such as when his actions led the crew to be split apart, can lead to dire consequences. It's perhaps also one of the most used tropes in the series for starting some chaos in multiple arcs.
