The Will of D is one of the many mysteries in the world of One Piece. Much of it is focused on a select few members, known as the people of the D, who live in the world of One Piece. The people carry the letter D in their name and are said to appear from time to time, bringing great catastrophe with them.

15 Three Of The Living Carriers Are Part Of The Worst Generation

Three of the still-living carriers of the Will of D are part of the "Worst Generation." These three are Monkey D. Luffy, Trafalgar D. Water Law, and Marshall D. Teach. All three of them are also captains of their crews, are Devil Fruit users, and have extremely high bounties if anyone caught them. Morgans believes that one of the members of the "Worst Generation" will become the next Pirate King, and many fans are split on whether Monkey, Trafalgar, or Marshall have a chance of actually becoming that Pirate King.

14 One Of The Carriers Is The Sole Known Survivor Of Flevance

Trafalgar D. Water Law is the only carrier that is the sole known survivor of Flevance. After many of Flevance's citizens became sick and died thanks to the poisoning effects of the amber lead, the royal family escaped with the World Government's help and left their citizens to die. The neighboring countries feared the disease becoming contagious and quarantined the island. Any citizens that tried to fight their way out were killed, and the only reason Trafalgar survived was thanks to hiding amid a mountain of corpses and smuggling himself out of the border. 13 One Of The Carriers Is One Of The Four Emperors

One of the carriers of the Will of D is one of the Four Emperors, Marshall D. Teach. Marshall notably is also the only character that has the power of two Devil Fruits so far, the Yami Yami no Mi that enabled him to create, control, and transform his body into darkness, and the Gura Gura no Mi, which gave him the ability to use shockwaves and earthquakes.

Another thing that sets him apart, however, is that Blackbeard is the only person out of all of the carriers of D that showed a fear of death. This is unlike many other carriers such as Luffy, Gol D. Roger, and Portgas D. Ace, who all were willing to accept death with smiles on their faces (though Luffy survived his near-death before Buggy could shoot him).

12 Only One Former Carrier Died In The Present Day (So Far)

Only one of the carriers of the Will of D, Portgas D. Ace, died in the present day of the series. The remaining deceased four that were known carriers of the Will of D, Gol D. Roger, Jaguar D. Saul, Portgas D. Rogue, and Rocks D. Xebec, died in flashbacks. There could be more carriers of D that are still alive. However, there is also the equal possibility that there are more carriers that are already dead or just died by the present day of the series. How soon those carriers of D will be revealed, however, is a mystery to fans.

11 Only Five Carriers Are Known To Be Alive

There are only five carriers that are known to be alive, out of the ten carriers featured so far. These five known living carriers are Monkey D. Luffy, Monkey D. Garp, Monkey D. Dragon, Marshall D. Teach, and Trafalgar D. Water Law. Interestingly enough, Marshall D. Teach and Trafalgar D. Water Law are not related to Luffy but act as enemies and allies to him respectively. Fans suspect that there will be more carriers of the Will of D revealed later on, but how soon that will be is unknown.

10 Its Meaning Is Still A Mystery

The Will of D has been a mystery right from the first chapter of the series. However, its meaning remains unknown. With that being said, it must be noted that several hints have been dropped related to it already, and it is believed that the Will of D has something to do with carrying out something from several centuries ago.

This may well tie down to the Ancient Kingdom in One Piece, the history of which has also remained under the covers until now. It's expected that the Wano Country arc will add to whatever it is that we know related to the Will of D.

9 There Are 10 Characters Associated With D

So far, a total of 10 characters with the letter D have made an appearance in the series. Although most of them happen to be pirates, there are some, like Monkey D. Garp and Jaguar D. Saul, who are in the Marines as well. Other than those two, Luffy's father, Monkey D. Dragon is yet another member of the clan who isn't associated with piracy.

Portgas D. Rouge is the only known member of this clan who isn't associated with any major power in the world of One Piece. She did, however, give birth to Portgas D. Ace who inspired others to define an era as well.

8 Those Who Carry The Will Are Hidden

Although only 10 members of the D people have been revealed to us so far, there are likely many more who are alive yet choose to remain hidden. This was confirmed by Donquixote Doflamingo after his capture, and according to him, the people who carry the Will of D are hidden and spread throughout the world.

With the tides of the era changing fast, more of their likes are showing themselves. The most recent character to reveal himself to be a D is none other than Trafalgar Law.

7 The Truth of the D. Is Still A Secret

There's certainly a significant meaning behind the D initial in One Piece, however, Oda has chosen to keep it a secret until the right time arrives. When asked in an SBS, Oda revealed that it is a mystery that he'll reveal in due time.

According to him, the D is simply meant to be read as a D for now, but in due time, there will be more details about it that will likely completely change the perspective of the fans about it.

6 The First Mention Of The Will Of D Was During The Drum Island Arc

Although the name 'D' has been introduced in the series right from its very beginning, the 'Wil of D' has been specifically mentioned for the first time during the Drum Island arc, which happens after the Straw Hats enter the Grand Line.

It was Dr. Kureha who first used the term 'Will of D'. Interestingly, she did this while revealing the true name of the Pirate King, who went by the false name of Gold Roger, thanks to the government's attempt to hide his name.

5 The Most Influential Character Alive Is Nico Robin

Although there are lots of characters who possess the skill of turning the tides of the era, such as Monkey D. Luffy, or Trafalgar Law, the most influential character who holds the key to the Will of D is certainly Nico Robin.

This is down to the fact that she's capable of reading the Poneglyphs and revealing the true history in the process. Nico Robin has been actively looking for the meaning of the 'Will of D'. So far, she's mentioned this term thrice, first at Alabasta, then at Skypiea, and finally at Sabaody Archipelago.

4 The Roger Pirates Know Its True Meaning

Just as some are looking for the meaning of the Will of D, some have already accomplished this task. As revealed by Silvers Rayleigh during the Sabaody Archipelago arc, the Roger Pirates completely explored the Grand Line, found the One Piece, and found the true history of the world.

In doing so, they found out what the Will of D truly was. Unfortunately, they seemed to be unable to carry the will out due to some shortcomings.

3 The Roger Pirates Cannot Do Anything About The Will Of D Due To Impatience

As mentioned above, the Roger Pirates were successful in finding out the true history of the world of One Piece, and in doing so, also found out about the Will of D. Despite this, they were unable to do anything about it.

While the reason behind that wasn't explained by Rayleigh, he did say that perhaps the Roger Pirates and the Oharans were way too impatient. The Straw Hats, on the other hand, were encouraged by Rayleigh to head down the path without rushing. In doing so, they might arrive at a different conclusion than the rest.

2 The Families Carried The Will Of D For Ages

Among those who carry the D initial in their names, nobody knows what it means. As confirmed by Jaguar D Saul, most don't know what the name meant. The only thing that they did know was that their families carried it for ages.

Interestingly, many different families seem to be the carriers of this name, such as the "Monkey D" family, and the 'Gol D' family. There are others such as Law, and Rocks, among many others whose families carry this name.

1 The Will Of D Is Closely Associated With Power

The Will of D is closely related to the balance of power in the world of One Piece. As explained by Rosinante, the world nobles often instill the fear of the D in their kids. This is likely because they're associated with bringing chaos in the world and, in some way, getting closer to that secret of the Void Century, even unknowingly at times.

Trafalgar Law also stated something similar to Donquixote Doflamingo upon being asked why he trusted Luffy so much. In the future, those with D in their names will surely shift the tides again.
