One Piece star Mayumi Tanaka has revealed that she's ready to leave voice acting behind, and she wants Monkey D. Luffy to be the role that sees her off.

As reported by Oricon (and translated by Anime News Network), Tanaka, who's known for voicing young boys in anime, recently stated that she is ready to say goobye to the industry. As she puts it, "Even putting aside the question of whether I can still voice young boys after this, I feel like I've accomplished everything I ever wanted to do with that sort of role." Tanaka says that when she's done, she wants Luffy to be her final role: "I've voiced many young boy characters in my time, and I want conclude my work in the voice acting industry with Luffy."

Tanaka has been voicing Luffy for more than twenty years. She made her debut as the character's Japanese voice all the way back in 1999, and she's appeared in more than 1,000 episodes of the series. Tanaka is 67 years old, and it makes sense that she's ready to retire. When that time comes, it seems fitting that she would wrap things up with the character who's been a part of her career for more than two decades.

Luffy is far from the only iconic role Tanaka has embodied. She's voiced a wide variety of young boys in different anime series, including Dragon Ball's Krillin. She's been voicing Krillin for even longer than Luffy, first portraying the character in the original Dragon Ball anime in 1986. Since then, she's appeared in an array of different Dragon Ball projects. She recently reprised the role in the film Dragon Ball Super: SUPER HERO, which is headed to the United States later in August.

One Piece has been on the air since 1999, but it's expected to draw to a close within the next few years. One Piece creator Eichiiro Oda is preparing to end the manga, which has been running since 1997, and the anime is expected to follow close behind. The anime has seen more than 1,000 episodes and fifteen theatrical movies.

Leading up to the series' final arc, a One Piece film titled One Piece Film: Red was recently released in Japan. The film, which focuses on Shanks, features Tanaka playing Luffy once more. A United States release date for the film has not yet been announced, but it is expected to arrive sometime this fall.
