The following contains spoilers for One Piece Chapter 1060, "Luffy's Dream," by Eiichiro Oda, Stephen Paul and Vanessa Satone, available in English from Viz Media.

In One Piece Chapter 1060, Luffy’s ambition was finally divulged to his Straw Hat Crew. It was the main focus of the chapter, until the concluding panel that surprisingly announced the arrival of a child-formed Jewelry Bonney flying out of a tidal-spiral. Bonney was last seen sneaking around Mary Geoise during the "Levely Arc", seemingly investigating what had happened to Bartholomew Kuma. How she came to be in the path of the Thousand Sunny has yet to be explained, but surely will be in the coming chapters. Her arrival is full of questions -- though there is one that may not immediately come to mind.

Many of the Worst Generation have appeared over the past couple of One Piece sagas: Trafalgar D. Water Law forming an alliance with Luffy to take down Donquixote Doflamingo, Capone Bege’s assassination attempt of Big Mom, Eustass Kid and Killer combining their strength to fight in Onigashima, and X-Drake and Basil Hawkins being a member of the Tobiroppo, with the former being a secret member of the Navy. They were all given moments to show their power and their arcs were fleshed out, offering greater insight into each. However, one member of the Worst Generation has yet to do anything significant and has barely been shown in their own adventure: The ‘Mad Monk’ Urouge.

The Worst Generation Pirates' Appearances Are a One Piece Staple

Bonney’s appearance in the One Piece manga is not overly surprising. With the narrative's current direction, it is clear there will be a deeper look at the Revolutionary Army, the events at Mary Geoise and the connection to Kuma. This could even expand into Kuma’s relationship with Doctor Vegapunk and Bonney’s own relationship with Kuma, exploring some hidden plot points that have been alluded to throughout the series. Luffy certainly has a stake in the events involving Sabo and Vivi, which at this point appear like a web of mystery, conflict and confusion. As Bonney was present during the events at Mary Geoise, it only makes sense she would be the next in line to hop aboard the Thousand Sunny.

The Worst Generation Pirates appearing in each arc or saga has become a staple of the story. Though some have had more impact or remained present longer, every arc has some sort of representative of the Worst Generation with an integral connection to the unfolding story. With the One Piece manga not too far off its conclusion, as commented by Eiichiro Oda, there are only so many scenarios left to have the Worst Generation not only appear, but have an important role in the respective arc. With all the recent developments, Bonney makes perfect sense.

Does the Worst Generation's Urouge Still Have a Role in the Story?

What does this mean for Urouge, the last and least featured member of the Worst Generation? The last time he was seen in One Piece was just before Kaido jumped from the clouds and Urouge offered a prayer for the Yonko, back in Chapter 795. Since then, he was only mentioned to have invaded Big Mom’s territory, defeated Charlotte Snack and then forced to flee by Charlotte Cracker.

It is difficult to imagine what major role Urouge could play in upcoming arcs, but a few recent events could imply a connection to the Mad Monk. There's the introduction of the new Pacifistas, the Seraphim, that have black wings that resemble King's. Urouge is more likely a Birkan from the Sky Islands, but this surface level connection could be something of significance for his future involvement in the story. The showing of Im's powerful Sky Weapon, possible connections to Enel -- and, in turn, relation to Urouge -- could all be the foundations of the latter's return to the page.

The problem comes from time and importance. One Piece is notoriously difficult to predict in how characters will appear, what they are doing or why. The idea of Urouge, a fairly irrelevant pirate, playing a large role in the story's climax is difficult to conceive. Due to the smaller amount of development in comparison with some of the others and his apparent lack of connection with the Straw Hats, it would be peculiar to have him appear in such a significant position, yet Oda is the master of subversion and plot direction. If Urouge is to play a part in the story, it must happen soon to avoid becoming another forgotten instrument in the grand performance of the pirate symphony.
