The Thriller Bark arc followed the Straw Hat pirates' adventures in the One Piece universe against the second warlord they've encountered, Gecko Moria. As they attempted to brave the mysterious Florian Triangle, their boat was abruptly seized with no visible way out.

Though the arc may have been compelling and engaging, there are dozens of narrative flaws and inconsistencies that are worth mentioning. By identifying the plot holes in the storyline, we can better understand how strong it was and whether or not it deserves the praise it often receives from the series' fans.

10 Zoro Survives Enduring Luffy's Extracted Pain

Zoro wounded with his shirt torn in One Piece

To gauge Zoro's loyalty toward Luffy, Kuma extracted all of the pain the Straw Hat captain felt throughout his encounter with Gecko Moria and manifested it as a sphere. Zoro entered it willingly even though he was already on the cusp of death.

Realistically, this should have killed him since the damage Luffy sustained to knock him unconscious was already drastically reduced on account of his rubber body. Considering that Moria stomped Luffy flat in his shadow-enhanced form (and because Zoro does not share his resistance to blunt attacks), he should have died dozens of times over.

9 Brook Accepted Luffy's Offer To Join The Crew Then Immediately Changed His Mind

Brook the Famous Skeleton of One Piece

When the crew came upon Brooks' ship, Luffy hopped aboard and immediately asked him to join the Straw Hats. Initially, the skeleton accepted, becoming the easiest recruit of the group to date.

However, he would change his mind shortly after coming on board the Thousand Sunny despite the fact that circumstances have remained the same. He would even show reluctance after he regained his shadow, which initially was the stated reason for his refusal.

8 Franky Needed Robin's Help On The Crumbling Bridge

Tararan, monster frm thriller bark

When Franky and Robin were surrounded by Tararan's forces, the former decided to destroy the bridge they were occupying so that his opponents could not strike them down from behind. The cyborg would have plummeted to his death if not for Robin's assistance, who produced arm-like wings from her shoulders to whisk them to safety.

However, the man's body was already capable of producing an extendable chain. This should have allowed him to grapple to a ledge without exhausting Robin, especially given how reliably he has used it in other similar circumstances.

7 The Weakest Members Of The Straw Hats Were The Most Excited To Leave The Ship

Usopp, Nami, and Chopper were the weakest members of the Straw Hats at the time - a fact that they were well aware of. However, when Franky revealed his ship's new tugboat (sharing the likeness of the Going Merry), the three were unusually eager to climb aboard.

Though this may have been excusable in Usopp's case on account of his sentiment for his previous ship, it did not explain his comrades' odd displays of bravado. As a consequence of their temerity, the trio was separated from the crewmates who were capable of defending them.

6 No One Found The Trio Inside Kumacy Despite The Way Chopper Hides

Kumacy and perona

Kumacy was the unlikely refuge that Chopper, Usopp, and Nami took when hiding from Absalom. The former was extremely restless, and the trio would occasionally poke their heads from his back to discern what was going on.

Inexplicably, no one noticed the intruders regardless of the ineffective way Chopper hides (obscuring part of his head and showing the rest of his body). Their cover was only blown after Oars' reveal and mostly of their own accord.

5 Moria Didn't Keep His Victims As Prisoners

Gecko Moria

After Gecko Moria extracted the shadow of his victims, he deposited them back to their ships since he couldn't kill them outright. Doing so would have banished their shades and thinned the ranks of his zombie armies.

However, there is no reason why he couldn't have taken his "guests" as prisoners, especially if he cut off their arms and legs to prevent escape, barely giving them enough food to survive. Given the character's sadistic nature, it wouldn't be beyond his consideration (even if it is much darker than the anime is usually willing to go).

4 Lola's Shadow Influenced Her Body's Memories, But No One Else's

One Piece - Lola - Thriller Bark

When Lola received her shadow back from her warthog zombie counterpart, she identified Nami as "Namizo" - the male alias the navigator gave when introducing herself. This implies that the memories a shadow receives are reciprocated back to their original hosts once the two are reunited.

However, this phenomenon was not observed in any members of the Straw Hat pirates, including Sanji, Zoro, and most relevantly Luffy (given his tenure as Oars).  It remains one of the arc's most unexplained inconsistencies.

3 Usopp Didn't Die From Being Mauled By Kumacy

Usopp (and the series as a whole) has made a specific note of the fact that he is an ordinary person with greater limitations than many of the other crewmates. Despite this, he was somehow capable of surviving being pummeled into the ground by Kumacy.

Considering that a single one of the monster's attacks was strong enough to shatter a stone column, his repeated blows should have pounded the sniper's bones into powder. He survived similar and equally brutal attacks from Perona herself without even being incapacitated after the duel was over.

2 Hogback Survived Being Stomped On By Oars

Hogback in One Piece.

Like Usopp, Doctor Hogback has no extraordinary qualities that might render him resilient to immense physical trauma. Near the conclusion of his fight against Robin and Chopper, he was stomped on by Oars.

Considering that the giant easily destroyed the center mast of Thriller Bark and was a massive sixty meters tall, this should have reduced the mad scientist to a bloody stain. However, he was seen absconding alongside Absalom at the conclusion of the storyline, having mysteriously recovered from what should have been critical injuries.

1 The Group Should Have Simply Ran From Gecko Moria Rather Than Trying To Fight Him

giant gecko moria

At the conclusion of the Thriller Bark story, Gecko Moria infused himself with every last shadow in his army. Zoro identified this as a ploy for him to buy time, though none of the Straw Hats ran, thereby putting themselves at critical risk.

Considering that Moria would have been forced to release his own shadows after 10 minutes (as Luffy did during his fight against Oars), the heroes simply needed to run inside the castle or take shelter behind the debris. If Luffy employed this strategy, he would have had enough strength left to fight Kuma.
